When she started to making them by hand, in her Old Havana workshop she just had the baby tub of her daughter Alejandra, which she still uses three years later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">From a clothesline in the patio of her home hang color pieces that will become diaries, folders\u2026which she will sell to the Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez Nature and Man Foundation, her principal buyer. Alejandra constantly moves around Yuy\u00fa, wanting to explain on her own the process she knows so well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">At the beginning they were full of holes, thick or thin. They didn\u2019t come out well. That\u2019s how I started to dominate the process a year ago, but I never wanted to quit doing it because I\u2019ve always liked it a lot,\u201d says the entrepreneur about her Ciclo Ecopapel She was an auditor, but since her daughter was born she learned to make accessories for birthdays and parties. The Antonio N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez Foundation proposed to her making paper by hand and in that way Yunairy started learning on her own. Not many in Cuba do that kind of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">She searched online videos on how to recycle paper. Although she knows of some experiences in Holgu\u00edn, Pinar del R\u00edo and a workshop of the City of Havana Historian\u2019s Office, she has not had contact with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">I changed technique three times until a got to what I use now. There are many variants but I stayed with the most comfortable for me. Friends, the family and acquaintances bring her used newspapers, magazines, books, notebooks, cards and telephone books. One time an enterprise gave her useless documents from the old archives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Although making recycled paper is more difficult than producing it industrially, the first is more ecological. Yuy\u00fa doesn\u2019t use chemicals of any type, and this gives each sheet a special value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">In the industry everything is mixed and later bleached, but I want to make ecological paper. That\u2019s why I separate by colors and types. The sheets are the size of an A3 page and producing each one of them costs her 2 Cuban pesos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Yuy\u00fa doesn\u2019t sell the paper as such, but rather as notebooks, notepads, diaries, envelopes, folders, pens, archive cases, key rings, information pamphlets, diplomas, bags and boxes. She prints them herself, and the products are personalized. Jigsaw puzzles for Alejandra also come out of her workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">Don&#8217;t you use chemicals for the color? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">No. If a want to make cone color paper I use cardboard. For her business and the family subsistence she built two cisterns and elevated tanks. For the paper process she calculates she uses some 300 liters a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">When it rains I use rainwater for the paper. That why I\u2019m going to place small gutters to collect the rain and for the process to be completely ecological. Her ideas sound like science fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">Yes, to use the energy in the blender instead of electricity,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">I always use the water several times. Under the press I have a bucket to collect the water that is poured. Since I don\u2019t use chemicals, when I finish it can be used to water the plants,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"en-US\">HOW THE PAPER IS MADE<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100643\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100643\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-100643\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Papel-Reciclado-Foto-Claudio-Pelaez-Sordo_-5-755x490-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Claudio Pelaez Sordo\" width=\"755\" height=\"490\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-100643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Claudio Pelaez Sordo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Recycled paper can be used up to eight times. With 1 kg of paper you get up to 35 sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">I also made the menu for a nearby cafeteria. People value manual, personalized work and since it is recycled paper the environment is protected. I want to make an agreement with the [N\u00fa\u00f1ez Jim\u00e9nez] Foundation to close the cycle: they give me the paper and I make the product,\u201d says Yuy\u00fa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Finally, Alejandra gets her mother\u2019s consent. In a few words she explains what she learned with Yuy\u00fa. Summing up the steps, the process would be the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">The paper is classified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">It is fermented in water between 24 and 48 hours, sometimes more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">The pulp is subsequently made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">The pulp is placed on a frame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">The water is extracted from each sheet using a press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span lang=\"en-US\">Afterwards it is put out to dry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_100640\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100640\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-100640\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Papel-Reciclado-Foto-Claudio-Pelaez-Sordo_-1-755x490-1.jpg\" alt=\"Yuy\u00fa and her daughter. Photo: Claudio Pelaez Sordo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">During the next school year Yuy\u00fa will organize a workshop on handmade paper products for the children in Alejandra\u2019s school. \u201cI also want to teach handicapped persons and that they can be some of the workers that I want to have at some time,\u201d says the entrepreneur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\">Ciclo Ecopapel exists in the heart of Old Havana, between narrow, irregular and dirty streets. But Yuy\u00fa perfects her idea. With the Cubaemprende project she receives advice in accounting and marketing. She knows she needs publicity.
