At least 10 persons have died in Cuba as a consequence of the effects of Hurricane Irma, sources from the General Staff of the Cuban Civil Defense reported today.<\/p>\n
Most of the deceased died because of the collapse of buildings, seven of them in Havana, although the hurricane also caused strong floods on the country\u2019s northern coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the passage of the dangerous Hurricane Irma through the national territory up to now the unfortunate loss of 10 human lives has been reported in the territories of Havana, Matanzas, Camag\u00fcey and Ciego de \u00c1vila,\u201d says the note.<\/p>\n
In a message President Ra\u00fal Castro appealed to the Cubans\u2019 \u201cspirit of resistance and victory\u201d after the passage of the \u201cdevastating\u201d hurricane that caused \u201csevere damages\u201d to the country, according to the communiqu\u00e9 published in the daily Granma.<\/p>\n
It highlighted that in these circumstances \u201cthe unity of the Cubans, the solidarity among neighbors and the discipline in the face of the orientations issued by the National General Staff of the Civil Defense has predominated.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the message, directed at the Cubans, the president specified that the hurricane caused \u201cdamages to homes, the electric system and agriculture,\u201d and also affected some of the island\u2019s tourist destinations.<\/p>\n
These tourist zones will be recovered \u201cbefore the start of the peak season\u201d in November, he specified.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese have been difficult days for our people, who in just a few hours saw how what had been built with effort had been hit by a devastating hurricane,\u201d the Cuban president said.<\/p>\n
During Friday and Saturday the hurricane affected Cuba\u2019s northern coast from east to west with a category 4, causing serious coastal floods and forcing the evacuation of 1.7 million persons.<\/p>\n
