Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez affirmed last Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump hasn\u2019t \u201cthe faintest moral authority\u201d to judge the island, and regretted the \u201crollback\u201d that affects bilateral relations.<\/p>\n
Cuba \u201cdoesn\u2019t need to receive lessons from the United States or from anybody,\u201d Rodr\u00edguez affirmed when participating in Friday\u2019s high-level debate session of the UN General Assembly, which is concluding today Monday.<\/p>\n
Rodr\u00edguez affirmed that when Trump spoke from the same podium last Tuesday he made \u201cdisrespectful, offensive and interventionist statements against Cuba and the Cuban government.\u201d<\/p>\n
In that speech, Trump, who was making his debut in the UN General Assembly, described the Cuban government as \u201ccorrupt and destabilizing\u201d and said that Washington will not lift the sanctions imposed on the island until there are fundamental reforms.<\/p>\n
And last Wednesday, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence accused the Havana government of being an \u201coppressive regime that has repressed its people,\u201d and affirmed that the UN Human Rights Council doesn\u2019t deserve its name for having among its members countries like Cuba and Venezuela.<\/p>\n
Rodr\u00edguez counterattacked and said that the United States has a \u201cpattern of systematic human rights violations, like the use of torture, detention and arbitrary deprivation of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
He specifically cited the case of the U.S. Guantanamo Base, \u201cthe police killing of Afro Americans, the civil death of innocent people by its troops and the xenophobia and repression of immigrants, even minors.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the Cuban foreign minister, the rapprochement that existed between the U.S. and Cuba under the Barack Obama administration is in a \u201crollback\u201d after the measures announced last June 16 by the White House.<\/p>\n
On that day Trump announced U.S. companies\u2019 prohibition to do business with Cuban companies owned or controlled by the Cuban Armed Forces and restrictions to U.S. citizens\u2019 travel to the island.<\/p>\n
The U.S. government \u201chas decided to intensify the economic, commercial and financial blockade, imposing new obstacles to the limited possibilities its business community had to trade with and invest in Cuba,\u201d the Cuban foreign minister affirmed.<\/p>\n
These measures, he added, \u201conly meet the interests of a group of Cuban origin in the south of Florida, increasingly more isolated and a minority, which insists on harming Cuba and our people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even so, Rodr\u00edguez said that the Havana government is still interested in maintaining a \u201crespectful dialogue\u201d with the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cCuba and the United States can cooperate and coexist, respecting the differences and promoting all that benefits both countries and peoples, but it mustn\u2019t expect that for this Cuba will make concessions inherent to its sovereignty and independence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
