Maximo Gomez,\u00a0chief curator\u00a0of the Cuba\u2019s National Museum\u00a0of Fine\u00a0Arts\u00a0(MNBA by its Spanish acronym)\u00a0is\u00a0a connoisseur of\u00a0the museology\u00a0or\u00a0patrimonial\u00a0science,\u00a0one of\u00a0the youngest\u00a0disciplines in the\u00a0called social\u00a0sciences.<\/div>\n
He has spent more than\u00a0four decades\u00a0working\u00a0for the Museum\u00a0that celebrated on April 28th\u00a0its\u00a0hundredth anniversary.\u00a0Gomez,\u00a0authoritative voice\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0difficult and\u00a0little known\u00a0art\u00a0of curating, talks withOnCuba\u00a0about new\u00a0challenges facing\u00a0Fine Arts,\u00a0as the most important\u00a0Cuban institution\u00a0in charge of\u00a0safeguarding,\u00a0exhibition and promotion\u00a0of Cuban and universal art.<\/div>\n

What would be missing\u00a0to\u00a0the MNBA\u00a0according to\u00a0the new\u00a0museological concepts?<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/strong>First we\u00a0must\u00a0define the concept of\u00a0museum.\u00a0A museum\u00a0has several meanings.\u00a0A museum is\u00a0a collection.\u00a0Its base,\u00a0its backbone is\u00a0a thesaurus\u00a0and\u00a0specialization\u00a0comes\u00a0from there.<\/div>\n
On the other\u00a0hand, it is a\u00a0lifelong education\u00a0center.\u00a0It is\u00a0a transmitter\u00a0of ideas\u00a0to the public.\u00a0Nothing is more\u00a0ideological\u00a0than a museum.<\/div>\n
Now let’s make\u00a0some history\u00a0.\u00a0Originally\u00a0the\u00a0MNBA\u00a0was\u00a0a versatile museum,\u00a0encyclopedic\u00a0from 1913 until\u00a0about\u00a0the 1940s\u00a0because it was\u00a0the museology of that time.<\/div>\n
The\u00a0institution had\u00a0about\u00a0twenty\u00a0collections: there were\u00a0historical objects,\u00a0death masks;\u00a0ethnology\u00a0and folklore were present, and\u00a0also\u00a0the decorative arts.<\/div>\n
Since\u00a0the 1960s\u00a0the museum became\u00a0into a specialized place in\u00a0plastic arts and\u00a0only\u00a0the main collection\u00a0remained there.\u00a0The\u00a0rest of the collections\u00a0were moved to\u00a0other\u00a0museums in the country. Museums have that feature: they\u00a0change\u00a0over\u00a0time.<\/div>\n
The museum underwent a remodeling process in 2000, then the old Social Palace of the Asturian Center of Havana was chosen as universal art building. Previously only one room exhibited a small sample of the more than 47 000 pieces the institution had.<\/div>\n
It’s not a\u00a0secret we need another place\u00a0to display\u00a0contemporary art because this new\u00a0museum is actually small.<\/div>\n
When\u00a0we made\u00a0the two projects\u00a0we\u00a0always thought\u00a0Fine Arts\u00a0would end in the\u00a0early\u00a01950s,\u00a0with the abstraction, and that is when\u00a0contemporary art\u00a0begins.<\/div>\n
Then\u00a0we\u00a0proposed another building\u00a0for the\u00a0development of contemporary art\u00a0lasting\u00a0until the first\u00a0decade of the 21st<\/sup>\u00a0century.\u00a0I can\u00a0not\u00a0predict\u00a0if I will be still working when\u00a0this idea\u00a0becomes true.<\/div>\n
Fine Arts\u00a0room\u00a0contains a selection of\u00a0selections\u00a0to\u00a0exemplify\u00a0the best of\u00a0contemporary art,\u00a0but it does not satisfy\u00a0the possibility\u00a0of exhibiting\u00a0projects\u00a0by new and young\u00a0artists.<\/div>\n
Wifredo\u00a0Lam\u00a0and\u00a0Roberto\u00a0Fabelo\u00a0were\u00a0emerging\u00a0artists\u00a0in their time and\u00a0they\u00a0also wanted to\u00a0exhibit their work.\u00a0That\u00a0is a natural need.<\/div>\n
Cuba\u00a0requires a\u00a0new\u00a0contemporary art\u00a0museum\u00a0because\u00a0right now\u00a0we only have\u00a0small galleries\u00a0for that\u00a0purpose.<\/div>\n
What is the\u00a0role of a\u00a0curator?<\/strong><\/div>\n
The curator\u00a0is a\u00a0social scientist who\u00a0conveys ideas\u00a0from a\u00a0thesaurus or\u00a0collection.\u00a0What is a\u00a0nineteenth\u00a0century French\u00a0painting? It is an idea\u00a0of an artist\u00a0who painted, for example,\u00a0the rising bourgeoisie, its\u00a0pose,\u00a0the\u00a0fashion of the time, its\u00a0social class.<\/div>\n
His role in a museum\u00a0is the\u00a0epitome\u00a0of curating, it is the highest\u00a0accomplishment of each\u00a0curator.\u00a0There are\u00a0curators for permanent and\u00a0transient\u00a0exhibitions. Curating is\u00a0an act\u00a0of knowing\u00a0because a curator must research\u00a0a lot\u00a0on the subject.\u00a0A curator\u00a0has to be creative\u00a0.<\/div>\n
I was appointed, after\u00a0years\u00a0,\u00a0chief\u00a0curator\u00a0of MNBA and\u00a0had the opportunity, along with\u00a0my team\u00a0of curators, of\u00a0designing the museology\u00a0of\u00a0the two buildings\u00a0(Cuban Art Building\u00a0and\u00a0Universal\u00a0Art Building). That\u00a0is my\u00a0masterpiece,\u00a0also\u00a0theirs\u00a0and\u00a0the one of\u00a0architect\u00a0Jose\u00a0Linares,\u00a0prestigious figure\u00a0of Cuban museography.<\/div>\n
We made the designs thinking in what must be exhibited and in which way the two museums should display their pieces.\u00a0Linares\u00a0was very important in that facet.\u00a0It is always\u00a0an ongoing dialogue between\u00a0museology\u00a0and museography.<\/div>\n
If I had chosen to live in Paris and work at the Mus\u00e9e d’Orsay, because my collection is the French one, it would be very nice for me. But I did not design the Orsay and I feel very satisfied with my work because I have contributed, with my knowledge, to the prestige of Fine Arts.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
