{"id":110056,"date":"2017-12-10T04:00:15","date_gmt":"2017-12-10T09:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/?p=110056"},"modified":"2018-06-19T04:59:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T08:59:00","slug":"the-special-period-again-in-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/advertorial\/the-special-period-again-in-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u201cSpecial Period\u201d again, in photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cuba of the \u201cSpecial Period,\u201d as the deep economic crisis into which the island fell after the collapse of the socialist camp in the 1990s is euphemistically known, is the one captured by U.S. photographer Tria Giovan with her camera and which now appears in the book The Cuba Archive.<br \/>\nFor the artist living in New York, this 167-page book with landscape format and in full color which she presented in Miami last weekend is \u201ca historic documentation\u201d of \u201cone of Cuba\u2019s most difficult moments,\u201d she said to EFE in an interview.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110064\" style=\"width: 689px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/419F8F4E00000578-0-A_poster_cutout_of_Fidel_Castro_s_head_hangs_above_a_doorway_in_-a-1_1499270174220-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-110064 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/419F8F4E00000578-0-A_poster_cutout_of_Fidel_Castro_s_head_hangs_above_a_doorway_in_-a-1_1499270174220-1-689x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Tria Giovan\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Tria Giovan<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe Cuba Archive is the result of six years of work. It includes images of the 12 trips she made to Cuba between 1990 and 1996, during which she visited spots never photographed before by a foreigner because of the lack of an apparent tourist attraction.<br \/>\n\u201cIt also includes intimate and informal moments,\u201d Giovan indicated, very excited about presenting her work in Miami, the city outside Cuba where more Cubans live.<br \/>\n\u201cI know that during those years it was very difficult for an American to travel to Cuba, that\u2019s why I feel lucky to have been allowed to be present during the moment of the drop in the country\u2019s economy,\u201d she indicated.<br \/>\n\u201cI got researcher visas, what I didn\u2019t say then was what type of research I was going to do,\u201d said Giovan, who grew up in the U.S. Virgin Islands and always wanted to visit the \u201csocialist\u201d Caribbean context.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110067\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/large_tria-giovan-93AC_3MenRemedios_001-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-110067\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/large_tria-giovan-93AC_3MenRemedios_001-1.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Tria Giovan\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Tria Giovan<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nA spoiled view with the camera, but with an invariable expression from the moment in which she asks for permission until she presses the shutter, leaves on these pages a feeling of loneliness and naivety at the same time, which the author conscientiously worked.<br \/>\n\u201cEverybody was waiting on lines to get something. The buses were full of people. For me it was easier to move around because I had dollars,\u201d indicates Giovan, who visited innumerable towns and provinces in the interior of Cuba with a friend, also a photographer, on a rented car driven by them.<br \/>\n\u201cWe gave them lifts. We acted as taxi drivers countless times because we were ashamed of the facilities we had,\u201d she sums up.<br \/>\nThe book, prepared by the Italian Damiani publishing house, captures from the desolation of a landscape to popular dances and Sunday clothes that did not escape the \u201cdaring\u201d eye of this professional photographer.<br \/>\nGiovan captured the possibly last propaganda billboards that the communist government used and still uses to extol its social and political system, leaving a fine irony in images like the one that reads: \u201cWe owe today everything we are to the revolution and socialism.\u201d<br \/>\nA dilapidated Cuba, faded and solitary is the one Giovan gives us, not without writing a dedication on the first page: \u201cFor the future of Cuba.\u201d<br \/>\nThe author likes to think that many of the girls who appear in the book with their family or alone \u201ctoday must be women and we don\u2019t know if they are still there.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI scanned everything. The negatives deteriorated and I had to revise them to conserve them. That\u2019s why it\u2019s called \u2018Archive.\u2019 I originally found 25,000 photograms. Afterwards I polished that out and I stayed with 1,000 scanned pictures, and later 600.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110068\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110068\" style=\"width: 694px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/419F8F5500000578-4647170-People_congregate_outside_a_repair_shop_where_two_women_work_on_-a-1_1499269218319-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-110068\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/419F8F5500000578-4647170-People_congregate_outside_a_repair_shop_where_two_women_work_on_-a-1_1499269218319-1-694x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Tria Giovan\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Tria Giovan<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cIn the end I stayed with 200 to finish in 125, which is what the book contains,\u201d Giovan indicates.<br \/>\nShe did the \u201crescuing\u201d work 20 years later and this was due, as she recalls, to news on Cuba she saw on television.<br \/>\n\u201cI remember that everything began on a very cold night in New York. I looked at the boxes in my home that said \u2018Cuba 1990s\u2019 and I started to revise the negatives. I found things that I hadn\u2019t seen before. My sense had matured, I started noticing photographs I had never seen,\u201d she remembers.<br \/>\nThe author, who right now is participating with her work in the collective photo exhibit \u201cCuba Is,\u201d in the Annenberg Space for Photography of Los Angeles, California, would love it if her book were presented in Cuba.<br \/>\n\u201cNow I see it as possible. I would like that. I know that in relation to Cuba there are people who have very strong feelings and I can understand them.
