Along with his 18-year career with the top U.S. ballet company, Carre\u00f1o has performed in festivals and other events and has taught at various national and international academies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While his name is included among the greatest stars of the late 20th and early 21st century, in his family, Cuba\u2019s most illustrious ballet dynasty, Carre\u00f1o is one of many. The glorious history of Cuba\u2019s top ballet company, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, features his uncle L\u00e1zaro, his brother Joel, and his cousin Alihayd\u00e9e, all of them former stars of the BNC. And his uncle \u00c1lvaro was a soloist in the company for decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jos\u00e9 Manuel is one of a handful of dancers who have been rewarded with the possibility of having an international career without losing their ties to the Cuban school of ballet. The first time he came to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Carre\u00f1o was three months old, carried in the arms of his Uncle L\u00e1zaro. People there still call him by his nickname, \u201cTot\u00f3.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI would spend my time there running about, guiding myself on the bars, watching the rehearsals, imitating what my elders did, and trying to jump,\u201d he recalled a few months ago during one of his regular visits to Cuba.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carreno11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11646\" alt=\"carreno1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oncubanews.com\/wmag\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carreno11.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carreno11.jpg 620w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carreno11-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The restless and disciplined young man\u2014and student of Loipa Ara\u00fajo and Laura Alonso\u2014won a diploma of honor at the Varna International Ballet Competition and a gold medal ay the New York International Ballet Competition in 1989. However, his triumph a year later at the Grand Prix in Jackson, Mississippi, opened the doors of various companies to him. In addition to his career with the ABT, he has performed with the English National Ballet, the Royal Ballet of London, the Tokyo Ballet, the Mariinski, Danza Contempor\u00e1nea de Cuba, Milan\u2019s La Scala Theatre Ballet and the Colon Theater Ballet of Buenos Aires, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, he attributes his onstage nobility, virility, elegance, and virtuosity to his education. \u201cComing out of a school like Cuba\u2019s is a very good foundation. After my graduation I was with the company for four years, and I performed practically all of the classical roles. I had the opportunity of working with Alicia, and with Josefina, Loipa, Aurora, and Mirta (\u201cthe Four Jewels\u201d), and with almost all of the greats of the Cuban ballet; with my Uncle L\u00e1zaro, with Jorge Esquivel\u2026that is an experience that is here,\u201d he said, laying his hand over his heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is an incredible foundation, and after having accumulated that knowledge, being with companies that were new to me has allowed me to see the world from different places, and that gives you a different perspective in any type of role or choreography. I\u2019ve done Giselle with various choreographers; it\u2019s very interesting. And also, working with different ballerinas is an extraordinary sensation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In February, Carre\u00f1o agreed to dance as a guest artist with the Ballet San Jose in its production of the classic Don Quixote. According to the president of that company\u2019s board of trustees, in seeing him dance with the company\u2019s members and watching how they responded to him, it was evident that he was the right person for the job of artistic director. \u201cIt was a natural process,\u201d she told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With his new job, Carre\u00f1o is continuing a tradition that is shared by every member of his family: devotion to teaching, as a normal channel in his still-young career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jos\u00e9 Manuel Carre\u00f1o, one of the best-known Cuban ballet dancers in world, has risen to the top of another U.S. ballet company: he is now the director of the Ballet San Jose in California.
