Cuban singer Carlos Varela will attend as a guest, with his band, the Red Hot + Cuba Festival, to be held in the Opera House of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York City.<\/p>\n
In the event, to be held in the "Big Apple" on November 30 and December 1, the musician will sing alongside his countrymen Osdalgia, Kelvis Ochoa, David Torrens, flutist José Luis Cortes "El Tosco" and trumpeter Alexander Abreu, leaders of the orchestras Havana D ‘Primera and NG La Banda, respectively, the website of Varela reported.<\/p>\n
Red Hot will present on this occasion a special tribute to Cuban music and is an excellent example of the diversity of the island’s musical heritage with representations of the rumba, mambo, timba, and their adaptation to more contemporary sounds.<\/p>\n
According to the same source, Red Hot is an international non-profit organization created in 1989 to "the fight against AIDS through popular culture" and this time joins BAM to celebrate World Aids Day (December 1).<\/p>\n
Part of the revenues generated by the festival will go towards preventive work against the disease in Cuba.<\/p>\n
This will be the fourth time that Varela plays in the United States, after the concerts offered in mid-2011 in the cities of Miami, New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
The author of “Los hijos de Guillermo Tell” (The Children of William Tell) has participated in festivals including the Playboy Jazz in Los Angeles, Pete Seeger’s Clearwater and the Blue Note Jazz New York.<\/p>\n
Varela, faithful exponent of the Cuban nueva trova in recent times, has more than a dozen albums throughout his career which are widely accepted by the public and critics.<\/p>\n
