Elpidio Vald\u00e9s is in the country\u2019s popular imagery. Through this character, Padr\u00f3n recreated the history of the struggles for the independence of the island.<\/p>\n<p>But what has most remained from his animated cartoons are the phrases already incorporated into the daily expression of those \u201cover there and over here,\u201d Cubans in all parts of the world who appropriated them to speak with a touch of Cuban humor.<\/p>\n<p>The most well-known is \u201c\u00a1Qu\u00e9 pa\u00eds!\u201d (What a country!). The artist\u2019s imagination allowed for the jokes that provoke so much laughter, like that one about the Spaniards: \u201cbestias, no tir\u00e9is con ventanas\u201d (beasts, don\u2019t shoot with windows), inspired by a Mart\u00ed text in which he spoke of how the Mamb\u00ed independence fighters used window bars to shoot.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubamagazine.com\/cultura\/juan-padron-un-pillo-maniguero\/\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Padr\u00f3n, un pillo manig\u00fcero<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That of \u201c\u00a1T\u00f3cate, Mar\u00eda Silvia!\u201d (a sort of high five) is used very much by Cubans when they offer a drink or the very common \u201c\u00a1Quita, chico!\u201d\u00a0 (Get off me, man!) referring to the moment in which Media Cara beats Cortico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEuteliaaa\u201d is another of the phrases that Cubans use as a scolding, referring to an absentminded Mamb\u00ed girl who appears in the \u201cElpidio Vald\u00e9s\u201d animated cartoons.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elpidio Vald\u00e9s seg\u00fan Juan Padr\u00f3n\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LfBQR727K48?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>Pur\u00e9 de talco\u201d (Mashed talcum) is another of the most used, as well as \u201cEso habr\u00eda que verlo, compay\u201d (We\u2019d have to see that, buddy), recalling Padr\u00f3n\u2019s anthological animated cartoons\u2019 farewell at the end.<\/p>\n<p>And it was Juan Padr\u00f3n who animated Mafalda and her friends, a series of 108 one-minute jokes and the unforgettable <em>Quinoscopios<\/em>, which also toured the world. That series of films directed by Juan Padr\u00f3n was based on comic strips by Argentinian Quino.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Quinoscopio 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6-It-qo_wfk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>These and many other phrases remain in the memory of Cubans, like some of the dialogues from <em>Vampiros en La Habana,<\/em> Padr\u00f3n\u2019s second film, where he tells the story of how Dracula\u2019s son challenged the Chicago mafia which is seeking the potion that allows vampires to withstand daylight.<\/p>\n<p>Some phrases are here to stay, like \u201cla receta del vampisol\u201d (the prescription for vampisol),\u00a0\u201c\u00a1Nadie detiene el progreso se\u00f1ores!\u201d (No sir, nothing can stop progress!) or \u201c\u00a1Y c\u00f3mo en Am\u00e9rica, mandar\u00e1 Johnny Terrori!\u201d (And like in America, Johnny Terrori will be the boss!).<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/51q0ff5FYtY<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A video recently published by filmmaker Ian Padr\u00f3n shows the hallmarks of his father\u2019s work and several excerpts of his creations which are part of Cubans\u2019 daily life. \u201cViva Papi\u201d sums up the work of Juan Padr\u00f3n, a fundamental figure of the island\u2019s comic strips and animated cartoons.
