
{"id":188794,"date":"2018-11-02T19:58:27","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T23:58:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=188794"},"modified":"2018-11-02T19:58:27","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T23:58:27","slug":"panama-starts-giving-cubans-tourism-card-for-30-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/cuban-economy\/panama-starts-giving-cubans-tourism-card-for-30-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Panama starts giving Cubans tourism card for 30 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Panama started giving out the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/panama-promueve-el-turismo-de-compra-para-cubanos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tourism card<\/a> that allows Cubans to remain 30 days in that territory to shop, announced this Tuesday in Havana Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela, who affirmed that he maintains \u201ctotal communication\u201d with the Cuban government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt already started yesterday (Monday) and the first cards were given, because simply any Cuban citizen who has traveled abroad and has a passport already has access to the card,\u201d the president explained after inaugurating his country\u2019s pavilion at the Havana International Trade Fair (<a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/espana-revalida-su-apuesta-inversora-en-cuba-en-fihav-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FIHAV 2018<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The new card, created by the Central American country to promote shopping tourism, can be acquired for 20 dollars in the Panamanian consulate in Havana.<\/p>\n<p>Varela, who is on an official visit to the island, insisted that the new simplified migratory process \u201cwill strengthen Cuba\u2019s economic opening,\u201d always \u201cfollowing and respecting the rules\u201d of the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"PtET1sdwIR\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/zona-franca-mas-grande-de-america-espera-llegada-masiva-de-cubanos\/\">Zona franca m\u00e1s grande de Am\u00e9rica espera llegada \u201cmasiva\u201d de cubanos<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abZona franca m\u00e1s grande de Am\u00e9rica espera llegada \u201cmasiva\u201d de cubanos\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/zona-franca-mas-grande-de-america-espera-llegada-masiva-de-cubanos\/embed\/#?secret=IQIHsUuiYc#?secret=PtET1sdwIR\" data-secret=\"PtET1sdwIR\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When asked about the Cuban government\u2019s reaction, Varela affirmed that during <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/presidentes-de-cuba-y-panama-apuestan-por-mayor-intercambio-comercial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this Monday\u2019s meeting<\/a> with his Cuban counterpart Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel he perceived there was \u201ca total communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an important step taken by Panama and there is going to be total communication to ensure that the decree\u2019s objective meets its purpose, which is to promote tourism and the exchange between both countries and that it not be used for anything else,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Panama, together with Costa Rica, was one of the countries most affected during the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/crisis-migratoria-de-cubanos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">migratory crisis <\/a>that occurred in late 2015, when the close of the Nicaraguan border left thousands of Cubans, who were trying to get to the United States, stranded in Central America.<\/p>\n<p>The Panamanian government last week announced the creation of a \u201cshopping card\u201d that will make it possible for Cuban citizens \u201cwho intend to travel to Panama or come for shopping tourism to travel to the country and remain for 30 calendar days.<\/p>\n<p>Cubans who previously have purchased a round trip Panama-Cuba ticket; who have a self-employment ID card; who have a certificate of creators (craftspeople); or who have previously traveled to Panama or to a third country, can opt for this procedure, according to the official regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCuba has become an important market for the Col\u00f3n Duty Free Zone. In recent years we have had a gradual increase of more than 20%, therefore starting now we have very high expectations, to even reach a 50%,\u201d the general secretary of the Zone, Luis Carlos Sa\u00e9nz, forecast.<\/p>\n<p>Sa\u00e9nz recalled that in 2017 more than 40,000 Cubans visited the Col\u00f3n Duty Free Zone, considered the largest zone of this type in the Americas, and affirmed
