{"id":188985,"date":"2018-11-07T10:10:37","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T15:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=188985"},"modified":"2021-04-26T20:58:39","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T00:58:39","slug":"antonio-gades-sevillanas-in-the-heart-of-havana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/antonio-gades-sevillanas-in-the-heart-of-havana\/","title":{"rendered":"Antonio Gades\u2019 sevillanas in the heart of Havana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some 200 persons concentrated in a landscape surrounded by two of the capital\u2019s emblematic buildings, the Grand Theater and the Capitol, to dance a \u201cFuego\u201d sevillana, perhaps one of the works that marked the most the career of the Alicante artist, and with which he triumphed on stages all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The summons surpassed all expectations since young people and girls wearing flamenco dance clothes didn\u2019t stop arriving to the place, in an \u201cevident\u201d show that \u201cSpain greatly loves Cuba but Cuba also greatly loves Spain,\u201d Eugenia Eiriz, Gades\u2019 widow and director of the Foundation that bears the dancer\u2019s name, affirmed to EFE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foundation is in Havana to participate in the 26th International Ballet Festival with the pedagogic show \u201cMovements; dancing from the toe to the heel\u201d and the workshop \u201cFlamenco as theater language,\u201d which includes an excerpt of \u201cFuego\u201d (1989), Gades\u2019 show inspired on the film \u201cEl amor brujo\u201d by Carlos Saura.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat excerpt corresponds to a sevillana and it occurred to us to take it out of the classroom environment where we were going to work with professional dancers, ask for the collaboration of the Spanish dance schools that exist in Cuba and that they also work that sevillana.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy over the idea\u2019s acceptance, Gades\u2019 widow highlighted \u201cthe joy with which they (those attending) show the imprint of Spain in this country\u201d and the demeanor of the dancers who answered this call, \u201call of them sieved through history and art and through Cuban culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donning red carnations and flamenco skirts, the participants demonstrated with the sinuous movements of their arms, with the calculated pulse of their turns and heel stamping, and especially with a lot of magic, that flamenco is an art that\u2019s very much alive on the Caribbean island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the dancing finished, the artists took off with applauses to the shout of \u201cviva Spain, viva Cuba and viva Antonio Gades,\u201d although taking advantage that their muscles were still hot there were those who continued dancing a bit more, to the delight of the zone\u2019s neighbors, who don\u2019t enjoy every day a show at the door of their homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have brought 90 students plus professional dancers from the company,\u201d commented to EFE Cuban dancer and choreographer Irene Rodr\u00edguez, the director of the company that bears his name and at present the principal ambassador of Spanish dance on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antonio Gades \u201ctook to the great stages a style like Flamenco, he stylized it, gave it a much bigger, much more universal vocabulary. In Cuba we love Antonio Gades a great deal,\u201d said the artist, who supervised from a balcony the movements of her students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A love, that of the island for the dancer, that was corresponded, since the artist\u2019s ashes rest in the Sierra Maestra, in Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of the Cuban Revolution, which a while before his death in 2004 conferred on him the most important distinction the country gives: the Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed Order, for his \u201cunswerving love, friendship and loyalty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The members of the company who traveled to Cuba also went to the island\u2019s eastern region to visit the mausoleum of the Frank Pa\u00eds Second Eastern Front where Gades\u2019 remains rest.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some 200 persons concentrated in a landscape surrounded by two of the capital\u2019s emblematic buildings, the Grand Theater and the Capitol, to dance a \u201cFuego\u201d sevillana, perhaps one of the works that marked the most the career of the Alicante artist, and with which he triumphed on stages all over the world.
