{"id":189767,"date":"2018-11-24T20:05:42","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T01:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=189767"},"modified":"2018-11-24T20:06:54","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T01:06:54","slug":"almost-nine-million-cubans-participate-in-debate-on-new-constitution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/society-cuba\/population\/almost-nine-million-cubans-participate-in-debate-on-new-constitution\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost nine million Cubans participate in debate on new Constitution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost nine million Cubans participated in the popular consultation on the draft of the new Constitution, the island\u2019s media <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/cuba\/39310-sesiona-comision-redactora-del-proyecto-de-constitucion-de-la-republica-de-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the results of this process were published.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commission that drew up the draft, led by ex-President and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Ra\u00fal Castro and which is also made up by President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/miguel-diaz-canel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, met for five days, during which the result of the consultation carried out between last August 13 and November 15 was announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 133,681 meetings were held during the process of the debate of the draft that will replace the Magna Carta in force (1976) to analyze the constitutional draft in workplaces, educational centers and barrios, which were attended by 8,945,521 persons, specified the official report.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ZlSgcvdTnw\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/ecos\/robertico-carcasses-yo-si-voy-a-decir-lo-que-pienso\/\">Yo s\u00ed voy a decir lo que pienso<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abYo s\u00ed voy a decir lo que pienso\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/ecos\/robertico-carcasses-yo-si-voy-a-decir-lo-que-pienso\/embed\/#?secret=d7Iczye07X#?secret=ZlSgcvdTnw\" data-secret=\"ZlSgcvdTnw\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba has some 11.2 million inhabitants and more than a million Cubans live abroad, who were given the possibility of participating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cubans made 1,706,872 interventions during the meetings in which there emerged 783,174 proposals, 666,995 modifications, 32,149 additions, 45,548 eliminations and 38,462 doubts were presented to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/reforma-constitucional-en-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">draft constitutional reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Commission was also informed about the 2,126 proposals made by Cubans residents outside the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The document proposed as the new Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, which incorporates 224 articles divided into 11 titles, 24 chapters and 16 sections to the text still in force, was first debated and approved by the National Assembly last July, before the popular consultation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most debated topics during the consultation process have been those related to the presidential term in office, the modification that will open the door to homosexual marriage on the island, the creation of the post of provincial Governor and economic matters like the participation of Cubans residing in other countries in investments, wages and private work.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Y6j1BQgMqQ\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/sociedad\/alrededores-del-articulo-68\/\">Alrededores del art\u00edculo 68<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abAlrededores del art\u00edculo 68\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/sociedad\/alrededores-del-articulo-68\/embed\/#?secret=miNdHayAhX#?secret=Y6j1BQgMqQ\" data-secret=\"Y6j1BQgMqQ\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the assessments and suggestions received from the work groups in charge of processing and analyzing the results of the consultation, the Commission made \u201ca detailed analysis\u201d and agreed \u201cto propose to the national Assembly the modifications to be made\u201d to the draft of the Constitution of the Republic, according to Cuban News Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final text of the document should be approved by the Assembly before being submitted to a referendum on February 24, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among its novelties, the draft of the new Constitution includes the right to private property, it eliminates the term \u201ccommunism\u201d and it recognizes the importance of foreign investment, in addition to introducing the figures of president of the Republic and prime minister and opening the door to same-sex marriages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text also maintains the PCC as the \u201chigher leading force\u201d and ratifies the socialist system on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost nine million Cubans participated in the popular consultation on the draft of the new Constitution, the island\u2019s media reported after the results of this process were published.
