{"id":191595,"date":"2019-01-10T09:03:53","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=191595"},"modified":"2019-01-10T09:03:53","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:03:53","slug":"drought-forecasted-for-caribbean-including-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/science-cuba\/cuban-environment\/drought-forecasted-for-caribbean-including-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Drought forecasted for Caribbean, including Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) warned of the possibility of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/sequia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drought<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the next three months in the region, including Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CIMH forecasts released this Tuesday indicate that under the influence of the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon &#8211; the warming of the Pacific waters that conditions the climate in other parts of the world &#8211; it is possible that during periods of less rainfall in the Caribbean region there will be periods of drought, which in some places could be extreme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CIMH, since December 2018 drought has been registered in areas of the Bahamas, Cuba, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica, among other Caribbean territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the short term, periods of drought may particularly affect Barbados, the Cayman Islands and the coast of Suriname, and it is possible in many other areas, while in the long term it may be registered in Antigua, the north of the Bahamas, western Cuba, Grenada, Jamaica and Saint Kitts-Nevis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its forecasts the CIMH affirms that after the transition from the dry to rainy season, during the months of April to June, warmer temperatures than usual can be expected with the possibility of heat waves in May, particularly in Belize and Trinidad and Tobago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it notes the possibility of more abundant than usual rainfall from April to June in the Eastern Caribbean.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"91MvzZ03Y0\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-vuelve-la-sequia\/\">Cuba: \u00bfvuelve la sequ\u00eda?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCuba: \u00bfvuelve la sequ\u00eda?\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cuba-vuelve-la-sequia\/embed\/#?secret=E0cOgPGBNm#?secret=91MvzZ03Y0\" data-secret=\"91MvzZ03Y0\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba suffered an intense drought between 2015 and the first half of 2017, considered the worst of its last 110 years, which caused severe losses in the economy and affected almost one million people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation started changing in September 2017 when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/especiales\/huracan-irma-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hurricane Irma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hit the island and its rainfall, followed by other rainy periods, allowed a recovery of the reservoirs. However, since then the meteorological scenario has oscillated between heavy rains &#8211; like those of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/noticia\/las-lluvias-producen-grandes-estragos-en-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tropical Storm Alberto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; and dry periods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December only 5% of Cuba presented deficits in its accumulated rainfall, while in the last quarter the effects reached 42% of the Cuban territory, with 3% with deficits classified from severe to extreme, 13% as moderate and 26% as weak, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insmet.cu\/asp\/genesis.asp?TB0=PLANTILLAS&amp;TB1=sqCLIMA&amp;TB2=\/CLIMA\/sequia\/sqDiciembre2018.htm#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Cuban Institute of Meteorology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EFE \/ OnCuba<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) warned of the possibility of drought during the next three months in the region, including Cuba.
