Photo: Susan Walsh \/ AP.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump said later in a press conference that he intends to designate Brazil &#8220;a great non-member ally of NATO&#8221; and &#8220;perhaps an ally of NATO&#8221; as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Days after taking office on January 1, Bolsonaro, a former army captain, said Brazil would consider allowing the United States to have a military base in the country, as a way to counteract Russian influence in the region, in particular in relation to Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That statement was roundly criticized, even by former military, and the government recanted. In 2013, the revelations of Edward Snowden showed that the National Security Agency had spied on the talks of then President Dilma Rousseff, which damaged relations between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electoral campaign of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/america-latina\/marielle-franco-y-la-necropolitica-brasilena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolsonaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to his insurgent methods and extensive use of social networks, has been compared with Trump&#8217;s 2016 campaign. Like Trump, Bolsonaro presented himself as a &#8220;defender of the people&#8221; against &#8220;the elite&#8221; and ranted against any negative coverage labeling it as &#8220;fake news.&#8221; And just as Trump exclaimed &#8220;United States First,&#8221;
