{"id":196144,"date":"2019-04-04T20:20:51","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T00:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=196144"},"modified":"2019-04-04T20:20:51","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T00:20:51","slug":"cuba-starts-giving-out-free-preventive-hiv-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-starts-giving-out-free-preventive-hiv-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba starts giving out free preventive HIV pill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba started giving out free pre-exposure prophylaxis pills (PrEP) to prevent the spread of HIV in healthy people, a program that is currently in the trial phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pills, which reduce by 90% the probability of acquiring the virus, have been given since last March 6 to 28 to people from the municipality of C\u00e1rdenas, in the western province of Matanzas, where 234 people with HIV live and every year about 30 new cases are registered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These persons were selected for the pilot plan in C\u00e1rdenas for having &#8220;a risky behavior and, consequently, a high possibility of contracting the disease,&#8221; explained one of the project&#8217;s leaders, Niura P\u00e9rez, quoted by the daily <em>Granma<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment, applied on the Island together with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is relatively new in the Americas, where, according to the PAHO, until 2018 only the Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Canada and the United States offered it as part of their public policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"f5r4ie6K36\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tendencias\/vida\/un-segundo-paciente-parece-libre-de-vih-tras-trasplante\/\">Un segundo paciente parece libre de VIH tras trasplante de c\u00e9lulas madre<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abUn segundo paciente parece libre de VIH tras trasplante de c\u00e9lulas madre\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tendencias\/vida\/un-segundo-paciente-parece-libre-de-vih-tras-trasplante\/embed\/#?secret=MwHritWv4P#?secret=f5r4ie6K36\" data-secret=\"f5r4ie6K36\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PrEP &#8220;comes to complement the years of efforts in the prevention of the infection in Cuba,&#8221; said Perez, who insisted that despite the success of the procedure, the constant use of condoms is recommended as a &#8220;safer method&#8221; to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We consider it (PrEP) as a combined therapy with the essential objective of changing risk behaviors,&#8221; said the specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-exposure prophylaxis includes the daily administration of antiretroviral drugs on a continuous basis to HIV seronegative people who have a substantial risk, above average, of contracting the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the only medication recommended for this therapy is Truvada, a combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate\/emtricitabine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1985, four years after the disease was discovered, the first case of HIV\/AIDS in a Cuban who had been for two years in Mozambique, Africa, was detected in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then more than 28,000 people with the virus have been diagnosed on the Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"UoAA7nwkaY\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/ciencia\/salud-en-cuba\/vih-en-cuba-2246-nuevos-casos-en-2017\/\">VIH en Cuba: 2,246 nuevos casos en 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abVIH en Cuba: 2,246 nuevos casos en 2017\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/ciencia\/salud-en-cuba\/vih-en-cuba-2246-nuevos-casos-en-2017\/embed\/#?secret=rdTGRohASI#?secret=UoAA7nwkaY\" data-secret=\"UoAA7nwkaY\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of the epidemic, Cuban patients were interned in facilities far from the cities where they were given treatment and were forbidden to leave, except on rare occasions, to prevent the spread of the disease. But with the application of new treatments and approaches, this practice ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the latest available data, there are currently 23,283 people living with HIV in Cuba, with a mortality rate of 17%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the island, a combination of five antiretroviral drugs manufactured in the country with other imported antiretroviral drugs, certified by the World Health Organization, are available to patients free of charge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban scientists have been testing the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/teravac-vih-solucion-cubana-contra-el-sida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TERAVAC-HIV<\/a> vaccine since 2017, developed at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center in Havana and designed to reduce the viral load of patients with the virus and improve their quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EFE \/ OnCuba<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuba started giving out free pre-exposure prophylaxis pills (PrEP) to prevent the spread of HIV in healthy people, a program that is currently in the trial phase.
