{"id":197514,"date":"2019-04-26T09:52:53","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T13:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=197514"},"modified":"2019-04-26T09:52:53","modified_gmt":"2019-04-26T13:52:53","slug":"five-more-hotels-and-enterprises-in-cuba-banned-for-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/five-more-hotels-and-enterprises-in-cuba-banned-for-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Five more hotels and enterprises in Cuba banned for Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five Cuban hotels and enterprises were added this Wednesday to the list of entities and sub-entities banned by the U.S. government for its citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The airline Aerogaviota, the Santa Isabel, in Havana, El Caney Varadero and Meli\u00e1 Marina Varadero Apartments hotels, as well as the Marina Gaviota scuba diving center, also in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/varadero\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Varadero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, are the new additions to the original list, published on November 8, 2017 as part of the measures of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/donald-trump-es\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> administration to limit Americans\u2019 business in and travel to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Federal Register <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2019\/04\/24\/2019-08256\/updating-the-state-departments-list-of-entities-and-subentities-associated-with-cuba-cuba-restricted\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published the announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the update, the third in recent months, after the 20 added in November 2018 and the other five entities included in March of this year. Currently there are more than 200 Cuban enterprises, hotels and other facilities banned by the State Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The additions came into effect as of this Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/opinion\/columns\/from-washington\/the-coral-gables-doctrine\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Coral Gables doctrine<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington forbids U.S. citizens from conducting direct financial transactions related to the enterprises included on the list, which has been described by the Cuban government as &#8220;arbitrary.&#8221; The list includes entities directly or indirectly linked to the Cuban armed forces and intelligence services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Security Adviser to the White House John Bolton had already announced the increase of the blacklist in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba-ee-uu\/eeuu-regresa-restricciones-a-cuba-a-los-tiempos-de-bush\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the speech he gave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Miami on April 17. Then he also advanced other measures against the island, including more restrictions on Americans\u2019 travel to Cuba and limits on sending remittances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That same day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that starting May 2 the Trump administration will allow the full application of Title III of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/helms-burton\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helms-Burton Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an extraterritorial regulation that would allow lawsuits against Cuban or foreign companies that negotiate with properties nationalized from Americans after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Trump administration\u2019s most recent measures \u2015which have even been criticized by U.S. allies such as the European Union and Canada\u2015 seek to affect Cuba\u2019s economy, under the assumption that Havana militarily supports the government of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and roll back in many aspects Barack Obama\u2019s rapprochement to the island.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five Cuban hotels and enterprises were added this Wednesday to the list of entities and sub-entities banned by the U.S. government for its citizens.
