{"id":198842,"date":"2019-05-16T15:07:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T19:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=198842"},"modified":"2019-05-16T15:07:11","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T19:07:11","slug":"canada-and-cuba-to-discuss-situation-in-venezuela-and-helms-burton-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/canada\/canada-and-cuba-to-discuss-situation-in-venezuela-and-helms-burton-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada and Cuba to discuss situation in Venezuela and Helms-Burton Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland announced this Wednesday that she will visit Cuba on Thursday to meet with her Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez and discuss the consequences of the U.S. Helms-Burton Act and the situation in Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freeland said in a statement that it is critically important that the two countries come together to discuss the economic, political and humanitarian crisis in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venezuela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and what they can do together to address it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian minister added that she also hopes to discuss how they can work together to defend Canadians who carry out legitimate trade and investment in Cuba following the end of the suspension of Title III of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/helms-burton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helms-Burton Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The announcement of the trip to Cuba came just minutes after Freeland ended a meeting in Washington with the chief U.S. trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, and other U.S. politicians to discuss trade relations between the two countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"YkHfpurT4p\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/canada\/canada-defendera-el-derecho-de-sus-empresas-a-comerciar-con-cuba\/\">Canad\u00e1 defender\u00e1 el derecho de sus empresas a comerciar con Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; any sentence issued under Title III of the Helms-Burton Act for economic activities in Cuba shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump activated the controversial section of that act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian government also said that it was working with the European Union and other &#8220;international partners&#8221; to defend the economic activities of Canadians in Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1996, Canada passed the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act (FEMA), which protects the interests of Canadians and prevents the recognition or enforcement of judicial decisions in Canada as a result of the Helms-Burton Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With respect to Venezuela, Ottawa and Havana maintain opposite positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba is one of the main international supporters of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, while Canada has led diplomatic initiatives to isolate his government and has recognized the president of the Venezuelan Parliament and opposition leader Juan Guaid\u00f3 as interim president of the country after he proclaimed himself as such last January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Precisely this Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Guaid\u00f3 held a telephone conversation in which they discussed the latest events of the Venezuelan crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the conversation, Trudeau &#8220;reiterated Canada&#8217;s condemnation of the Maduro regime\u2019s illegitimate withdrawal of the parliamentary immunity of the elected members of the National Assembly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trudeau and Guaid\u00f3 agreed on the &#8220;need for the international community to align itself for a peaceful transition in Venezuela.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland announced this Wednesday that she will visit Cuba on Thursday to meet with her Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez and discuss the consequences of the U.S. Helms-Burton Act and the situation in Venezuela.
