{"id":199277,"date":"2019-05-23T20:30:39","date_gmt":"2019-05-24T00:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=199277"},"modified":"2019-05-24T17:51:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T21:51:07","slug":"a-cuba-week-in-washington-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/a-cuba-week-in-washington-dc\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cuba week in Washington DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/relaciones-cuba-ee.uu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfavorable political<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> context, several events on Cuba are coinciding these days in the U.S. capital, in search of rapprochement and dialogue between both countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The week began with a celebration of Cuban culture organized by the Center for Democracy in the Americas (CDA), where politicians and representatives of diverse organizations attended a concert by Cuban singer Ayme\u00e9 Nuviola.<\/span><br \/>\n<a class=\"twitter-timeline\" data-width=\"500\" data-height=\"750\" data-dnt=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cda_dc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">Tweets by cda_dc<\/a><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDA also organized a panel on civil society together with the Latin American Working Group (LAWG), Oxfam America, and the Washington Office for Latin America (WOLA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter published on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wola.org\/program\/cuba\/u-s-cuba-relations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">web page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the purpose of the event is to know the impact on Cuban civil society &#8220;when Cuba is concluding its first year with a new president, has promulgated a new constitution and is adapting to the changing dynamics of U.S. policies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WOLA promulgates opposition to the &#8220;counterproductive U.S. embargo against Cuba, which has not promoted human rights, has done nothing to encourage political or economic reforms and, in turn, has isolated the United States from the region,&#8221; the organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wola.org\/program\/cuba\/u-s-cuba-relations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teresa Garc\u00eda Castro, WOLA Program Associate, told OnCuba that during the event they highlighted how the latest changes in Cuba policy under the Trump administration &#8220;only punish Cuban entrepreneurs and civil society.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Instead, a more constructive approach\u2014one that encourages rather than discourages internal reform\u2014would be to normalize relations between the United States and Cuba,&#8221; Garcia added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the speakers was Camilo Condis, a private worker and manager of ArteCorte in Havana, as well as representatives of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/countries\/cuba\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxfam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organization that works directly in Cuba since 1993 with sustainable development and food security projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linda Delgado, Oxfam America\u2019s director of government affairs, commented that the organization is &#8220;deeply concerned about the negative impact on the Cuban people of the Trump Administration\u2019s return to decades-long failed US policies toward Cuba.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The new travel and remittance restrictions will severely impact Cuban families, civil society, and the fast emerging private sector in Cuba,&#8221; Delgado told <strong>OnCuba<\/strong>, adding that these &#8220;policies toward Cuba are the wrong way to go in order to support constructive dialogue that engages diverse voices or to further sustainable development and social justice.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They are harmful and only create obstacles to further transformations in Cuba, as well as an affront to the wellbeing of families on the island,&#8221; she concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Emily Mendrala, executive director of the CDA, this is an important moment in Cuba and a critical moment for relations between the United States and the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;U.S. policies have acute and wide-ranging impacts on Cuban civil society, which range from impacts on livelihoods to space for public expression,&#8221; Mendrala said to <strong>OnCuba<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This morning&#8217;s conversation highlighted for policymakers the extent to which U.S. policies of engagement can support Cuba&#8217;s civil society, and\u2014to the contrary\u2014the risks of policies of isolation,&#8221; concluded. Mendrala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, on Tuesday May 21 the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USChamber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> U.S. Chamber<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CubaUS?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba U.S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Business Council held in Washington a Business Forum, where congresspersons, senators, businesspeople, as well as representatives of civil society from both countries participated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/cda_dc\/status\/1131018401781092352<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Republican congressman for the 6th district of Minnesota, Tom Emmer, publicly thanked the opportunity to speak at the forum on &#8220;the importance of improving business relations between both countries and building a better tomorrow, together,&#8221; he said on his Twitter account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participants included Ambassador Jeffry DeLaurentis, former Charge d&#8217;Affaires (topmost diplomatic representation) at the U.S. embassy in Havana, as well as Patrick Leahy, Senator for the State of Vermont, another key figure in relations with Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/CubaEdTravel\/status\/1130840100177371138<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last February Leahy headed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba-ee-uu\/senadores-de-eeuu-presentan-nuevamente-proyecto-de-ley-contra-el-embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the embargo to allow freedom of export of U.S. agricultural products to the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban-American Carlos Gutierrez, former U.S. secretary of commerce, recalled that &#8220;Cuba is the only country in the world, with exception of North Korea, where a U.S. citizen can\u2019t travel freely due to outdated U.S. law.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cuba<\/a> Business Forum was well attended.
