are being carried out for their safe return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also affirmed that the Cuban government &#8220;has not ceased for a moment in the efforts and procedures&#8221; to achieve this purpose, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2019\/07\/05\/ministro-de-salud-cuba-trabaja-sin-descanso-por-el-retorno-a-salvo-de-medicos-secuestrados-en-kenya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Cuban website<em> Cubadebate<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/japortalmiranda\/status\/1147147926008938497\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1147147926008938497&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Foncubanews.com%2Fcuba%2Fmedicos-cubanos-secuestrados-en-kenia-siguen-vivos-segun-ministro%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check Tweet Here<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He explained that as part of the negotiations Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has spoken twice on the phone with his counterparts in Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Somalia, Abdullahi Mohammed, something that the president himself <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/diaz-canel-again-speaks-with-presidents-of-kenya-and-somalia-about-kidnapped-cuban-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on his Twitter account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also explained that other Cuban officials, such as First Vice President Salvador Vald\u00e9s Mesa, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez and himself, have maintained a &#8220;permanent dialogue&#8221; with authorities of both African countries as part of the case\u2019s follow-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The minister informed that the doctors\u2019 release is &#8220;a complex process&#8221; and that &#8220;it takes time and as much discretion as possible, so that the steps and actions taken can be successful and the doctors can return without problems.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, he said that so far no one has requested any kind of condition or ransom in exchange for the release of Rodriguez and Herrera, &#8220;despite some press reports that appeared and then were denied.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus he denied reports of publications such as the Kenyan daily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/citizentv.co.ke\/news\/abductors-demand-ksh-150-million-ransom-for-cuban-doctors-247754\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizen Digital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which claimed that the Somali Al-Shabaab jihadist group, which allegedly is keeping the doctors hostage, demanded a ransom of 1.5 million dollars for the doctors\u2019 release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kenyan government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/kenia-se-niega-a-pagar-rescate-para-liberacion-de-los-medicos-secuestrados\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it will not pay any ransom, since it is not part of &#8220;that country\u2019s government policy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collaborators were captured on April 12 by alleged members of Al-Shabaab when they were going to the Mandera Hospital escorted in a local government car. One of the policemen who accompanied them died in the assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the kidnapping, which occurred in the Kenyan region of Mandera, other doctors from the island who were working in areas bordering Somalia were relocated to safe places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodr\u00edguez, a surgeon from the Cuban province of Villa Clara, and Herrera, a specialist in Integral General Medicine of Las Tunas, are part of a contingent of 100 Cuban doctors who arrived last year in Kenya under an agreement signed between the two countries to improve access to specialized medical services in the African nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the kidnapping was known, the Cuban government established contacts with its peers in Kenya and Somalia and created a working group to follow up on the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Kenyan and Somali elders have interceded on behalf of the doctors, but still without results.
