
{"id":204721,"date":"2019-08-22T17:31:12","date_gmt":"2019-08-22T21:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=204721"},"modified":"2019-08-22T17:31:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-22T21:31:12","slug":"la-bajada-radar-in-pinar-del-rio-starts-working-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/la-bajada-radar-in-pinar-del-rio-starts-working-again\/","title":{"rendered":"La Bajada radar in Pinar del R\u00edo starts working again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the eight weather observation radars in Cuba, that of La Bajada in Pinar del R\u00edo, is already operational after four years of inactivity, according to the newspaper <\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2019-08-19\/radar-de-la-bajada-vuelve-a-custodiar-el-occidente-19-08-2019-21-08-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This observation point will resolve a &#8220;zone of silence&#8221; that existed previously and that hindered the early detection and monitoring of fast-forming meteorological phenomena in areas near Cuba in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently mentioned by Dr. Jos\u00e9 Rubiera in his weather forecasts, La Bajada radar is located in the Guanahacabibes peninsula and has been very relevant for the meteorological information of that part of Cuba since a radar manufactured by the Japanese Mitsubishi was installed there in September 1973.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its location, along with others in the Caribbean region (including that of Punta del Este and Gran Piedra) in Cuba, was due to a collaboration between the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) seeking to equip the region with the necessary means to monitor hurricanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-204723\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1-768x421.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/labajada-1-750x411.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the radar has received various repairs and technological changes, but a few months ago all the equipment was changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Gerald Miguel Malag\u00f3n, director of the Meteorological Center of Pinar del R\u00edo, explained to <em>Granma<\/em>, the radar\u2019s technology had become obsolete and &#8220;spare parts for its repair were no longer found in the market.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In 2005, thanks to the Battle of Ideas Program, this radar was partially modernized and automated. It was then possible to reduce the electricity consumption of the original 20 kW to 2.5 kW. The command became automatic, and acquiring and processing of information became digitized. In 2006 the radar was connected to the INSMET data network and the images started being available for the entire national meteorological system. The old antenna\u2019s drive was modernized to improve positioning accuracy; but the Transmitter, Receiver and Antenna remained the same as 1973. However, the information obtained from the radar was much better in quality and quantity,&#8221; specialist Orlando Lazaro Rodr\u00edguez Gonz\u00e1lez explained on his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meteoradares.wordpress.com\/2019\/02\/08\/la-bajada-subiendo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time the modernization also included the repair of the facilities, the layout of a new electrical system and the rehabilitation of areas for training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Our radar has a range of 450 kilometers, we practically cover from Florida, Yucat\u00e1n and most of the Caribbean Sea,&#8221; L\u00e1zaro Mart\u00edn Ledesma, one of the five people working in 24-hour shifts as an observer-reviewer in the radar station, told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telepinar.icrt.cu\/activo-radar-bajada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>TelePinar<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technician also explained to the local television station that they make observations every 15 minutes, broadcast four newsletters every six hours and, in case of storms, as many warnings as necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the eight weather observation radars in Cuba, that of La Bajada in Pinar del R\u00edo, is already operational after four years of inactivity, according to the newspaper Granma.
