{"id":205015,"date":"2019-08-28T16:01:06","date_gmt":"2019-08-28T20:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=205015"},"modified":"2019-08-28T16:01:06","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T20:01:06","slug":"canadian-foreign-minister-travels-to-cuba-to-address-venezuelan-crisis-with-her-counterpart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/canadian-foreign-minister-travels-to-cuba-to-address-venezuelan-crisis-with-her-counterpart\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Foreign Minister travels to Cuba to address Venezuelan crisis with her counterpart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada&#8217;s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland traveled to Havana this Wednesday to meet with her Cuban counterpart, Bruno Eduardo Rodr\u00edguez, and discuss the Venezuelan crisis, as well as the entry into force of Title III of the U.S. Helms-Burton Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freeland and Rodr\u00edguez meeting will be the third the two foreign ministers have been holding on Venezuela since May and is taking place parallel to the intensification of Ottawa&#8217;s contacts with the United States on the situation in the South American country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although both Canada and the U.S. have pointed out that Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro has to abandon power for the country&#8217;s democratization, Freeland omitted this last requirement in a statement released this Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;There is an international convergence around the need for a peaceful transition in Venezuela that results in free and fair elections and the return to democracy,&#8221; Freeland said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Canada has a longstanding relationship with Cuba, and this week\u2019s visit will allow us to build on previous conversations held in Havana and Toronto,&#8221; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCancilleres de Cuba y Canad\u00e1 se re\u00fanen en La Habana\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cancilleres-de-cuba-y-canada-se-reunen-en-la-habana\/embed\/#?secret=iY8qPHV8FM#?secret=lcdkDhDDU7\" data-secret=\"lcdkDhDDU7\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other issue that Freeland will deal with Rodr\u00edguez is the entry into force of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first Freeland and Rodr\u00edguez meeting on Venezuela took place on May 16 in Cuba, while the second one was held on June 7 in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, on August 1, U.S. special envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams traveled to the Canadian capital a day after President Donald Trump declared that he was considering blockading Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Canadian authorities refused to provide details about Abrams&#8217; visit, which was revealed only by the U.S. Department of State, sources consulted by EFE noted that Washington\u2019s strongman for Venezuela held meetings with &#8220;senior officials&#8221; of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the officials who met with Abrams was Freeland, who was officially traveling to Europe on that day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following his meeting with Canadian representatives, Abrams stated that the United States and Canada were working together to bring the European Union (EU) closer to the positions of the two North American countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU has refused to recognize opposition leader Juan Guaid\u00f3 as the interim president of Venezuela, as Ottawa and Washington have done, as well as the imposition of sanctions on the Maduro government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrams was also pessimistic about the outcome of the negotiations between Canada and Cuba regarding Venezuela: &#8220;We wish them luck,&#8221; Abrams told Canada\u2019s CBC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, Freeland had declared that Cuba has &#8220;a role to play&#8221; in the future of Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"N4bwleWoMG\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/canada-says-cuba-has-a-role-to-play-in-the-future-of-venezuela\/\">Canada says Cuba has &#8220;a role to play&#8221;
