{"id":205257,"date":"2019-09-02T15:32:48","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T19:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=205257"},"modified":"2019-09-02T15:32:48","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T19:32:48","slug":"the-archbishop-of-san-cristobal-de-la-habana-new-cardinal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/the-archbishop-of-san-cristobal-de-la-habana-new-cardinal\/","title":{"rendered":"The archbishop of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Habana, new cardinal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monsignor Juan de la Caridad Garc\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez, current archbishop of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Habana, will join the College of Cardinals on October 5 when a consistory will be held for the creation of 13 new cardinals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garc\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez is one of the 10 new cardinals under 80 years old and therefore possible participants in a future Conclave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Francis made this announcement this Sunday, after the Angelus prayer in St. Peter&#8217;s Square.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College of Cardinals is currently made up by 216 cardinals, of them 118 voters and 98 non-voters, to which the 13 announced this Sunday will be added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monsignor Juan de la Caridad Garc\u00eda Rodr\u00edguez was born in Camag\u00fcey in 1948. He replaced Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, recently deceased, in 2016 as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Crist\u00f3bal de La Habana. His episcopate motto is: &#8220;Go and announce the gospel.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He entered the San Basilio Magno Seminary in El Cobre where he began his philosophical and theological studies and subsequently completed his theological training at the San Carlos y San Ambrosio Seminary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was ordained a priest in 1972 at the parish church of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Candelaria in Mor\u00f3n.
