In fact, it is a dish that is eaten in Europe and South America,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/juventud-t%C3%A9cnica\/puede-comerse-el-caracol-gigante-africano-un-cient%C3%ADfico-responde-ca128a0ccbab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Antonio V\u00e1zquez, a specialist in the Malacology Laboratory of the Vector Control Department of the Pedro Kour\u00ed Institute of Tropical Medicine in Havana, to the magazine <em>Juventud T\u00e9cnica<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the researcher warned that eating it raw marinated in lemon juice &#8220;would cause a problem, because it could transmit the nematode that causes eosinophilic meningoencephalitis in humans.&#8221; He also alerted Cubans to be careful because on the island &#8220;there is no culture rooted in the consumption of snails.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juventud T\u00e9cnica contacted Dr. V\u00e1zquez after the recent posting on the internet of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=greQJIAffSk&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;fbclid=IwAR3P6ad3gxBOrXZp7rD0TRDggGsm9q92yB_oLcbEDwIcFY4PZfVxsR9UnU0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which a Cuban cooks and eats an African snail, which has generated numerous reactions and concerns about the possible transmission of diseases such as bronchitis and intestinal disorders due to consumption of the mollusk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given these doubts, the scientist said that the snail does not cause bronchitis nor is it toxic or poisonous, but it is a \u201charmful animal\u201d because it is \u201cthe best vector\u201d of <em>Angiostrongylus cantonensis<\/em>, a parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis, a dangerous disease that can even be deadly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Its large size allows it to carry a greater number of infectious larvae, so the probability of becoming infected with it is higher,&#8221; said the specialist about this mollusk, although he said that &#8220;all cases of this type of meningitis that have occurred in Cuba have not been from the African snail, only reported in 2014.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3lQvsLBhnA\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/llega-el-caracol-gigante-africano-en-la-zona-central-de-cuba\/\">Llega el caracol gigante africano a la zona central de Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abLlega el caracol gigante africano a la zona central de Cuba\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/llega-el-caracol-gigante-africano-en-la-zona-central-de-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=YvGJUsjXjc#?secret=3lQvsLBhnA\" data-secret=\"3lQvsLBhnA\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Giant African Snail was first detected in Cuba in 2014 in the neighborhood of Arroyo Naranjo, in Havana, and nowadays it has spread almost throughout the island. Considered one of the 100 &#8220;most invasive&#8221; harmful species in the world, its introduction was apparently due to Afro-Cuban religious practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This snail can lay between 50 and 300 eggs six times a year, and live up to nine years.
