
{"id":208339,"date":"2019-10-28T19:09:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T23:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=208339"},"modified":"2019-10-28T19:09:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T23:09:04","slug":"fuel-supply-improves-in-cuba-after-impact-of-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/fuel-supply-improves-in-cuba-after-impact-of-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Fuel supply improves in Cuba after impact of sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a month and a half of lines at gas stations and a shortage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/transporte-publico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public transportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that led President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel to stop his caravan to board passengers, Cubans saw this week an improvement in fuel supply, although instability continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The precedent of the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/diaz-canel-cuba-ha-ido-remontando-crisis-energetica-coyuntural\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the island was due to the sanctions imposed in April by the United States against shipping companies so that they would not bring Venezuelan oil, on which Cuba depends, as part of a series of Washington pressures to promote a political regime change model in both nations<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the population\u2019s restlessness was contained thanks to government measures to facilitate Cubans\u2019 transportation, President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/miguel-diaz-canel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u00edaz-Canel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s public handling of the situation and the fact that the South American nation\u2019s crude oil again started getting to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was 11 days with the car put away without being able to work. At home without doing nothing,\u201d 33-year-old Frank Ram\u00edrez, who supports his family working as a taxi driver, told the <em>Associated Press (AP) <\/em>agency. His vehicle\u2015a 50-year-old Plymouth\u2015needs about 30 liters of diesel daily to get around.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_208341\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-208341\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-208341\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/fotos-otmaro-rodr\u00edguez-11-1-750x500.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-208341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Otmaro Rodr\u00edguez.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week Ram\u00edrez managed to buy fuel, but \u201cthere is still instability\u201d with gas stations closed at times\u2015because they run out of fuel and must wait for the supply trucks\u2015or limitations on the amount that is dispatched to each person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorists consulted by AP on a tour of the Cuban capital told similar stories of 25-hour lines in September, sleepless nights or fights in the lines, in which people took turns marking a position for several vehicles waiting for the arrival of the gas trucks. The lines became shorter as the weeks went by.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the recent U.S. sanctions to asphyxiate Cuba, Washington withdrew diplomats from Havana, suspended the arrival of cruise ships, limited the travel of its nationals, made blacklists of enterprises on the island and allowed the opening of lawsuits against firms from third countries that operate in the Caribbean nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week it was reported that airlines that lease aircraft to Cubana de Aviaci\u00f3n would be sanctioned and this Thursday the authorities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/cubana-de-aviacion-cancela-vuelos-a-causa-de-endurecimiento-del-bloqueo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that flights of that company had already been suspended to at least seven international destinations and as many domestic ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey pursue us ship by ship, negotiation by negotiation&#8230;. We can\u2019t be naive and we have to protect ourselves,\u201d D\u00edaz-Canel said before deputies earlier this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/problema-coyuntural-o-crisis-estructural-en-cuba\/<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the energy crisis began in September, the government launched a savings plan that envisaged the increase in the use of animal traction to guarantee agricultural production, changes in school hours, turning off air conditioners in state agencies and the decrease in the working day hours, among other initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspectors took to the streets to force cars from state entities\u2015abundant on the island\u2015to transport people at the crowded bus stops due to lack of transportation and official press media showed photos of D\u00edaz-Canel\u2019s caravan stopping along with all his escort to give people at a bus stop a ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these actions managed to mitigate the crisis, according to experts, resistance and savings have their limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSavings is a variable that runs out over time.
