{"id":208673,"date":"2019-11-03T14:01:24","date_gmt":"2019-11-03T19:01:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=208673"},"modified":"2019-11-03T14:01:24","modified_gmt":"2019-11-03T19:01:24","slug":"avianca-suspends-sale-of-tickets-to-and-from-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/avianca-suspends-sale-of-tickets-to-and-from-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Avianca suspends sale of tickets to and from Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Avianca Holdings air consortium announced that as of this Thursday it is suspending the sale of tickets for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/vuelos-a-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flights <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to and from Cuba, due to \u201ca pending matter with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC),\u201d <em>Prensa Latina ( PL) <\/em>news agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prensa-latina.cu\/index.php?o=rn&amp;id=317151&amp;SEO=avianca-holdings-suspende-venta-de-boletos-desde-y-hacia-cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company\u2015resulting from the merger of the Colombian airline Avianca and the Salvadoran airline TACA\u2015explained in a release that while resolving a pending issue with OFAC related to the commercial operation to Cuba, it will suspend the sale of tickets from and to the island for fear of sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avianca currently has a daily flight to Havana from Bogot\u00e1 and another from San Salvador, which will continue to operate while the case is being resolved, but it hasn\u2019t been ruled out that the suspension of ticket sales will be extended to operations as such, says the Spanish agency <em>EFE<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe tickets already issued remain normal and will be respected,\u201d but in the hypothetical case that the measure is extended to the suspension of flights the company will have to get other airlines for those who have already bought tickets, a company source said to <em>EFE<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Avianca Holdings suspender\u00e1 la venta de tiquetes desde y hacia Cuba a partir de hoy.  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/00Ixz8Vv8A\">https:\/\/t.co\/00Ixz8Vv8A<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Diario La Rep\u00fablica (@larepublica_co) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/larepublica_co\/status\/1189949971426091009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 31, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avianca started being considered a company subject to U.S. regulations regarding Washington\u2019s economic embargo against Cuba after carrying out operations in its financial structure to have access to a loan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synergy Aerospace Corp, the majority shareholder of Avianca Holdings, established the limited liability company BRW in Delaware, the United States, to which it unilaterally transferred all its consortium shares. This is why the company said its commercial operations to and from the island \u201ccould have unintentionally violated the U.S. OFAC regulations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consortium voluntarily notified this situation to the U.S. authorities, and is cooperating with OFAC to deliver the necessary information, and opportunely get out of this situation, added the statement cited by <em>PL<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 23, Avianca reported that due to its current loans, the company is subject to U.S. regulations, so \u201cit hired external consultants to carry out a review aimed at identifying any potential violation of the U.S. sanctions regulations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"VbWIv7nWCI\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-to-suspend-flights-to-cuba-except-havana\/\">U.S. to suspend flights to Cuba, except Havana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;U.S. to suspend flights to Cuba, except Havana&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-to-suspend-flights-to-cuba-except-havana\/embed\/#?secret=Dw1Ojs2Fsw#?secret=VbWIv7nWCI\" data-secret=\"VbWIv7nWCI\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that occasion, the airline, which is based in Panama, said that \u201cit is committed to fully cooperating with OFAC, but it is too soon to predict what action OFAC could take in relation to this issue (including sanctions and fines) and what effect such action could have on the reputation of the company, its business, its finances or the results of its operations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Holding noted, however, that flights to and from Cuba were an \u201cintangible amount\u201d of the company&#8217;s gross revenues.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Avianca Holdings air consortium announced that as of this Thursday it is suspending the sale of tickets for flights to and from Cuba, due to \u201ca pending matter with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC),\u201d Prensa Latina ( PL) news agency reported.
