{"id":208785,"date":"2019-11-06T17:14:33","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T22:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=208785"},"modified":"2019-11-06T17:14:33","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T22:14:33","slug":"cuba-hopes-to-continue-improving-relations-with-european-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-hopes-to-continue-improving-relations-with-european-union\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba hopes to continue improving relations with European Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Tuesday Cuba said it hoped to continue the path of progress in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/relaciones-cuba-union-europea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bilateral relations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the European Union (EU), after the arrival of the current Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, to the position of the community high representative for foreign affairs and vice president of the European Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe hope to continue to maintain a constructive dialogue based on the political dialogue and cooperation agreement,\u201d the first bilateral agreement between the EU and Cuba that has been applied for two years, following the principles of \u201crespect\u201d and \u201cnon-interference,\u201d said the Cuban ambassador to Brussels, Norma Goicochea, in a meeting with journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 1, Borrell will take over from Italian Federica Mogherini as the head of the EU diplomatic service. During her term she managed to revoke the unilateral and restrictive common position of the EU towards Cuba and develop the current agreement that serves as a framework for their relations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-October, Borrell made a visit to Cuba, in which he held a meeting with President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel and other leaders. On that occasion, the Spanish Foreign Minister rejected, on behalf of his country and the European Union, the \u201cextraterritorial and unilateral measures\u201d imposed by Washington and pledged support for Spanish companies operating on the island and which are being affected by the increase in U.S. sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"czc0PXhzin\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/diaz-canel-se-reune-con-josep-borrell\/\">D\u00edaz-Canel se re\u00fane con Josep Borrell<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abD\u00edaz-Canel se re\u00fane con Josep Borrell\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/diaz-canel-se-reune-con-josep-borrell\/embed\/#?secret=zx578kNcqA#?secret=czc0PXhzin\" data-secret=\"czc0PXhzin\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goicochea said in Brussels that the objective is \u201cto keep moving forward\u201d on this path that \u201creflects a will\u201d by the European Union that \u201chas nothing to do with what the United States is doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the U.S. has closed avenues for dialogue, the EU has opened them,\u201d said the ambassador, while considering that the European Union is \u201caccompanying\u201d the island through its cooperation in various fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ambassador explained, days before the UN General Assembly again declares itself on the resolution that Cuba presents every year to condemn the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/embargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embargo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> imposed by Washington on the island, that the U.S. economic harassment has \u201cintensified\u201d since the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activation of Title III of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/helms-burton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helms-Burton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Act of 1996 by the Trump government in May has made it possible to file lawsuits with U.S. courts over the use in Cuba of nationalized land and property after the 1959 revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also added to other U.S. actions that prohibit U.S. cruise travel, provisions that have been considered by the EU as \u201cextraterritorial\u201d and \u201cunilateral.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"sp9lILiDvG\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/melia-admits-pressures-for-working-in-cuba\/\">Meli\u00e1 admits &#8220;pressures&#8221; for working in Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Meli\u00e1 admits &#8220;pressures&#8221; for working in Cuba&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/melia-admits-pressures-for-working-in-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=FLxQ1EOHoz#?secret=sp9lILiDvG\" data-secret=\"sp9lILiDvG\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrump is trying to impose the stick policy,\u201d Goicochea said, confirming that by the end of October, 20 lawsuits had already been filed through Title III.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to her, the sectors most affected by this provision are industry, tourism and private initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU has already advanced its intention to apply the \u201cembargo statute,\u201d which prohibits the application in Community territory of sentences in the U.S. based on Title III and allows defendants to receive compensation in European courts. Nor does it rule out a possible lawsuit before the World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EFE \/
