The death of a baby girl and the effects suffered by two other minors <\/span>after being vaccinated<\/span><\/a> in a polyclinic in Havana, was due to \u201cnegligence during the process of conservation, preparation, manipulation and exposure of the bulb used,\u201d says the official report of the island\u2019s Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the conclusions of the investigation carried out, released on Friday night, the cause of the \u201cadverse incident associated with the MMR vaccine,\u201d which protects against mumps, measles and rubella, \u201cis not linked to the intrinsic properties and quality of the vaccine,\u201d but \u201cviolations of the norms established for vaccination\u201d in the Betancourt Neninger Polyclinic of the municipality of Habana del Este, where the children had been vaccinated on October 7.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, the nurse \u201cdirectly involved\u201d in the event was definitively separated from the national health system, disabled from the exercise of her profession and \u201cis in the process of a criminal investigation,\u201d while \u201cadministrative measures were to others with responsibility in the control of the identified deficiencies,\u201d the report states.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of the indicated negligent process, one-year-old Paloma Dom\u00ednguez Caballero died on the night of October 9 \u201cas a consequence of complications.\u201d The other two affected minors \u201crecovered and were discharged from hospital, based on the intensive treatment they underwent,\u201d says the MINSAP, which specifies that the clinical manifestations of \u201ctwo other minors with symptoms,\u201d \u201cdid not correspond to this event, and they evolved favorably from their disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

All the children \u201cwere hospitalized immediately after the symptoms appeared and received medical attention in the intensive care ward of the Borr\u00e1s-Marf\u00e1n and Centro Habana children\u2019s hospitals,\u201d according to the MINSAP.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe clinical manifestations presented by the three baby girls affected by the adverse incident, correspond to a Toxic Shock Syndrome, caused by a bacterium (Staphylococcus aureus), isolated in the investigations carried out,\u201d explains the investigative commission, which states that \u201cit was found\u201d that the batch and diluent used in the vaccination \u201cis suitable for use, according to laboratory tests carried out in several accredited research centers in the country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This vaccine, which is applied in Cuba, \u201caccording to an official plan, to children one and six years old,\u201d is imported and \u201cprequalified by the World Health Organization, certified and approved for use by the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (CECMED).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the batch of the vaccine and diluent involved, says MINSAP, 43,630 doses had been administered this year on the island, \u201cwithout reports of similar incidents.\u201d Previously, from 1986 to 2018, more than 9 million doses of the MMR vaccine had been applied on the island, \u201cwithout the occurrence of serious effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In the report, the Cuban health authorities regret what happened and affirm that \u201cthe results of the investigation were informed to the relatives of the three affected children\u201d and that they are taking \u201cmeasures so that events like this are not repeated in our country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The disclosure of the official report occurs a few days after the departure to Mexico of Yaima Caballero and Osmany Dom\u00ednguez, parents of the deceased baby girl and who after this incident have urged the Cuban authorities to give an explanation of what happened and <\/span>have claimed<\/span><\/a> to have been pressured to abandon their campaign through the social media, which has been denied by the health authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
