{"id":209422,"date":"2019-11-16T15:10:22","date_gmt":"2019-11-16T20:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=209422"},"modified":"2019-11-17T18:21:37","modified_gmt":"2019-11-17T23:21:37","slug":"cuban-government-assures-it-is-working-on-animal-protection-la","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-government-assures-it-is-working-on-animal-protection-la\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban government assures it is working on animal protection law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) announced that \u201cthey are currently working on drawing up legal provisions to guarantee animal welfare,\u201d according to a press release <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minag.gob.cu\/node\/2071?fbclid=IwAR3E1IBAw-l9QkK3yYU5cfjWt7YVgWEyuhsKKKh-SOHA1kufDZ8OsvXyNDc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this Friday on its official site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement says that in recent weeks there has been a debate through the social media on issues concerning the protection and care of animals in Cuba, which has generated \u201cconcern\u201d among Cubans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal advocates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/defensores-de-animales-denuncian-sacrificio-de-perros-callejeros-en-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recent days to a massive pick up of stray dogs in Havana\u2015which they attributed to the visit of the king and queen of Spain and the 500th anniversary of the city\u2015by the Zoonosis state program, in charge of this task and which many activists criticize for its methods of capturing and putting to sleep the animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe way they catch dogs that roam the streets on the grounds that they transmit diseases is a form of mistreatment. Why not sterilize them? Why do they have to kill them?\u201d asked an activist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information released on Friday by MINAG recalls that during the consultation process for the creation of the new Cuban <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/constitucion-cubana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constitution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the issue of animal abuse and animal rights generated \u201cmultiple opinions,\u201d and that, in the end, the Magna Carta reflected in subsection j of its article 90 the duty of every Cuban citizen to protect wildlife and ensure the conservation of a healthy environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Se trabaja actualmente en la elaboraci\u00f3n de disposiciones jur\u00eddicas dirigidas a garantizar el bienestar animal. It had a wide convocation, but thereafter the authorities had not allowed more walks or protests in other places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On that occasion\u2015on the date of the celebration of Dog&#8217;s Day\u2015hundreds of activists walked about three kilometers with banners and raised their voices to say \u201cLaw yes, abuse no\u201d and \u201cStop animal abuse.
