The <\/span>National Assembly of Cuba<\/span><\/a>, through its International Relations Commission, expressed \u201cits strongest rejection\u201d of the resolution approved this Thursday by the European Parliament (EP), which calls for the release of Cuban opponent Jos\u00e9 Daniel Ferrer, imprisoned since almost two months ago on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n

The commission of the Cuban legislative body condemned the resolution, \u201capproved by a majority of 56% in the European Parliament, for its interference in and damaging content to Cuban sovereignty, with absolute ignorance of our reality,\u201d according to an official statement <\/span>published<\/span><\/a> in the state media<\/span><\/p>\n

The European resolution was passed by 382 votes in favor, 243 against and 42 abstentions. It condemns the \u201carbitrary\u201d detention of Ferrer\u2015who according to Havana is imprisoned on charges of participating in a violent incident against another person\u2015and \u201curgently exhorts the Cuban authorities to release him immediately, asks that he be guaranteed access to the lawyer of his choice, that he have contact with his family and all the documentation related to his detention and what he is accused of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The note affirms that the EP’s statement \u201cresponds to the new slander campaign orchestrated by the government of the United States of America as part of its failed policy of hostility and aggressions against Cuba\u201d and expresses the \u201cdeep concern\u201d of the Cuban Assembly over the fact that \u201cright-wing political forces within the European Parliament\u201d have \u201cechoed that campaign and with obvious political motivation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The island\u2019s MPs denounce the \u201cfrank subordination\u201d of their EP peers to \u201cthe imperial desires of the United States,\u201d which, they affirm, \u201ccontradicts the spirit of respectful dialogue that has prevailed in <\/span>relations between Cuba and the European Union<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
