{"id":210103,"date":"2019-12-02T13:10:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T18:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=210103"},"modified":"2019-12-02T13:10:09","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T18:10:09","slug":"cuba-advances-in-therapeutic-hiv-aids-vaccine-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-advances-in-therapeutic-hiv-aids-vaccine-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba advances in therapeutic HIV\/AIDS vaccine project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba is advancing in the development of a therapeutic HIV\/AIDS vaccine that has concluded the preclinical studies phase in lab animals and testing in about 20 human volunteers, with results of safety, tolerance and without adverse effects, according to the project leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The product named \u201cTeravac-HIV\u201d is essentially aimed at inducing an anti-HIV cellular response to reduce the burden of the virus on patients by promoting a \u201cfunctional cure,\u201d said principal project specialist Enrique Iglesias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCuba has a low incidence of HIV\/AIDS epidemic, but there is a high resistance to some of the antiviral compounds we use. In that context, a therapeutic vaccine could contribute to the management of the epidemic,\u201d Iglesias told the state newspaper Juventud Rebelde in an article published this Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 26,952 persons on the island infected with the HIV\/AIDS virus, 80 percent are male and 82 are between 20 and 54 years old, according to the latest official data on the epidemic released last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of these, 86 percent receive free and controlled antiretroviral therapy, based on a combination of Cuban and other imported antiretroviral drugs, certified by the World Health Organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those diagnosed, the most affected are transsexual women, with 19.7%, men who have sex with other men (MSM)\u20155.6%\u2015and people who practice prostitution, which are 2.8%.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"gLcvlsnsKf\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-starts-giving-out-free-preventive-hiv-pill\/\">Cuba starts giving out free preventive HIV pill<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba starts giving out free preventive HIV pill&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-starts-giving-out-free-preventive-hiv-pill\/embed\/#?secret=ELjY3G2K9z#?secret=gLcvlsnsKf\" data-secret=\"gLcvlsnsKf\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A genetically engineered vaccine\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cuban Doctor in Biological Sciences said that the vaccine candidate that the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) has been developing for several years contains three genetically engineered proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of these proteins generates the specific immune response against the virus, and two other hepatitis B virus (HBV) proteins were included\u2015one is the active ingredient of the prophylactic vaccine\u2015and both can generate immunity against HBV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specialist said that at the end of the research phase\u2015of preclinical and toxicological tests in lab animals\u2015a study was designed that included more than 20 HIV-positive patients in good health distributed in two groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne group received intranasal and subcutaneous inoculations with Teravac and the other with a placebo.
