Writer and essayist Abel Prieto Jim\u00e9nez, former minister of culture, was presented this Monday as the new president of <\/span>Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prieto is taking over the presidency of this cultural institution founded in 1959 after <\/span>the death<\/span><\/a> of its previous president, poet and essayist Roberto Fern\u00e1ndez Retamar, who held that position from 1986 until his death last July 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

At <\/span>a meeting this Monday<\/span><\/a>, reviewed by the publication La Ventana<\/em>, with Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso and other officials of the Ministry of Culture, the First Vice President Marcia Leiseca, founder along with Hayd\u00e9e Santamar\u00eda of Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas, was also released from her post.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abel Prieto was president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and then Minister of Culture from 1997 to 2012 when he was appointed advisor to the then president of the Councils of State and of Ministers, Army General Ra\u00fal Castro Ruz.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequently, he provisionally retook the post of Minister of Culture when the former minister, Juli\u00e1n Gonz\u00e1lez, was dismissed. Prieto was currently the president director of the Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed Cultural Society and director of the Mart\u00ed Program Office.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abel Prieto graduated from Hispanic Language and Literature at the University of Havana. He is the author of the novels El vuelo del gato (1999)<\/em> and Viajes de Miguel Luna (2012)<\/em> and short stories such as \u201cLos bitongos y los guapos\u201d (1980)<\/em> and \u201cNoche de s\u00e1bado\u201d (1989).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
