{"id":210746,"date":"2019-12-13T17:48:55","date_gmt":"2019-12-13T22:48:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=210746"},"modified":"2019-12-13T17:48:55","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T22:48:55","slug":"bolivarian-bloc-will-meet-in-havana-where-evo-morales-is-staying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/world\/latin-america\/bolivarian-bloc-will-meet-in-havana-where-evo-morales-is-staying\/","title":{"rendered":"Bolivarian bloc will meet in Havana, where Evo Morales is staying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) will hold its 17th Summit this weekend in Havana, which is expected to be attended by the leaders of Venezuela, Nicaragua and host Cuba, not ruling out the presence of former Bolivian President Evo Morales, supposedly still on the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Cuban government has not yet officially reported on the event, the Provincial Road Safety Commission issued a statement on the closure of several streets \u201con the occasion of the celebration, on Saturday 14, of the closing activity of the Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Trade Treaty of the Peoples.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closure of the Summit, according to the note published in the media, will take place on the steps of the University of Havana, a regular enclave for official celebrations of relevance such as the \u201cmarch of the torches\u201d for the anniversary of the birth of national hero Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed or the ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the death of Fidel Castro.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">El 14 de Diciembre en la Habana d\u00eda de su fundaci\u00f3n en el 2004 se celebra sesi\u00f3n del ALBA TCP mecanismo de integraci\u00f3n en el \u00e1rea momento para si continuidad y fortalecimiento Cuba a la vanguardia latinoamericana <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rTmNHxktnD\">pic.twitter.com\/rTmNHxktnD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alejandro Iturraldes G\u00f3mez (@GomezIturraldes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GomezIturraldes\/status\/1204809478803197955?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Venezuela and Cuba, the ALBA brings together Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Nicaragua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Saint Kitts-Nevis. Bolivia was part of the bloc, but withdrew last November by decision of the interim government that assumed power in that country after the resignation of until then President Evo Morales, in the midst of the serious crisis that broke out after the October 20 elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morales, during his years as president, was one of the main defenders of the ALBA and he did not miss any of the organization&#8217;s summits (the last one also held in Havana a year ago), which is why his presence is presumable this weekend to receive the support of traditional allies like Venezuela and Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the current secretary general of the organization is Bolivian David Choquehuanca, who was foreign minister for a great deal of Evo Morales&#8217; years in government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The indigenous ex-president <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/evo-morales-travels-to-cuba-temporarily-for-medical-consultation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been in Cuba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since December 6, supposedly for medical reasons, although the Cuban authorities have not confirmed or denied his presence in the country.
