In an interview he gave to the Agence France-Press (AFP)<\/em>, the director general for the United States of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Carlos Fern\u00e1ndez de Coss\u00edo, said that the Cuban government is \u201cready\u201d for a possible breaking of diplomatic relations with Washington, although \u201cwe don’t want this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe must be aware that the situation can be further aggravated,\u201d said Coss\u00edo, referring to the escalation of U.S. sanctions in the last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who today are in charge of U.S. policy for the western hemisphere are people with very extreme and very aggressive behaviors and positions towards our country,\u201d said Fern\u00e1ndez de Coss\u00edo, probably referring, without mentioning it, to <\/span>Mauricio Claver-Carone<\/span><\/a>, advisor for Latin America to the U.S. National Security Council and a trusted man of President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that their efforts are to break all existing ties, to close embassies,\u201d said the Cuban official.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very difficult to think seriously about sustainable progress in favor of bilateral relations,\u201d which, he said, have suffered \u201cprogressive erosion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
