We want to rescue them alive so they can reunite with their families,\u201d Kenyan Executive spokesman Cyrus Oguna confirmed to <em>EFE<\/em> news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oguna thus reiterated the position that the Kenyan authorities have maintained for months on the status of surgeon Landy Rodr\u00edguez and general medicine specialist Assel Herrera Correa, kidnapped on April 12 by alleged members of Al-Shabaab in the city of Mandera, near the border with Somalia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The doctors are well, but without proof that they are alive<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite insisting that the doctors are \u201cwell\u201d somewhere in Somalia, to date neither the Kenyan government nor the kidnappers themselves have provided proof that they are alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that regard, the government spokesman was in favor of discretion and stressed to <em>EFE<\/em> that he cannot disclose the \u201cwhereabouts\u201d of Rodriguez and Herrera for \u201csecurity\u201d reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat will happen if we say where they are?\u201d he insisted. \u201cThey can be moved to another site. Therefore, we know where they are but we cannot reveal it for the safety of the operation and the situation in which they find themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"I0811lr1aN\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/al-shabaabs-kidnappings-chronology-of-the-wait\/\">Al-Shabaab\u2019s kidnappings: chronology of the wait<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Al-Shabaab\u2019s kidnappings: chronology of the wait&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/al-shabaabs-kidnappings-chronology-of-the-wait\/embed\/#?secret=qlATdLbmP7#?secret=I0811lr1aN\" data-secret=\"I0811lr1aN\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asked if the kidnappers have demanded the payment of a ransom in exchange for the freedom of the doctors, Oguna was blunt: \u201cNo, as far as I know,\u201d he replied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last May, elders from Kenya and Somalia who traveled to the Somali region of Jubaland, controlled by Al-Shabaab, to negotiate for the Cubans, said they saw the doctors alive and providing medical assistance to the local population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to those traditional leaders, the kidnappers had even demanded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/piden-15-millones-de-dolares-de-rescate-por-los-dos-medicos-cubanos-secuestrados\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a ransom of some 1.5 million dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a condition for their release, the Kenyan press then reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case, Oguna clarified that the Kenyan government follows a very clear policy in these cases: \u201cNever negotiate with terrorists. That is our position and that has never changed,\u201d he stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the Cuban ambassador to Kenya, Ernesto G\u00f3mez D\u00edaz, assured <em>EFE<\/em> that, for the time being, there is \u201cno\u201d news about the fate of Rodr\u00edguez and Herrera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverything stays absolutely the same. We have nothing, neither forward nor backward. We are in the same place. We don&#8217;t lose hope,\u201d added the ambassador.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On December 30, Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel spoke with his counterparts in Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/diaz-canel-da-a-conocer-gestiones-para-el-regreso-de-los-medicos-secuestrados-en-kenia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe efforts for the safe return to the homeland\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the doctors, as indicated in his official Twitter account, without giving more details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in that month, Cuban Deputy Prime Minister In\u00e9s Mar\u00eda Chapman said after returning from Kenya, where she participated in a summit of the ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific), that the Kenyan government ratified that the doctors \u201care well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"1Cdy9ktxow\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/kidnapped-cuban-doctors-are-fine-says-vice-president\/\">Kidnapped Cuban doctors \u201care fine,\u201d says vice president<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Kidnapped Cuban doctors \u201care fine,\u201d says vice president&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/kidnapped-cuban-doctors-are-fine-says-vice-president\/embed\/#?secret=Mk6U4GV8lQ#?secret=1Cdy9ktxow\" data-secret=\"1Cdy9ktxow\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Kidnapping in Kenya and captivity in Somalia<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two doctors were going to the Mandera hospital accompanied by armed guards when they were intercepted and kidnapped on April 12, 2019, after a shooting in which one of the guards protecting them died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the attack, Kenya mobilized commands from the LRS elite army brigade, specialized in gathering information in hostile territory, in order to support the police and military to catch the kidnappers, who crossed into Somalia with the doctors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kenyan government believes that the kidnapping was carried out by militants of Al-Shabaab, a Somali group that joined Al Qaeda in 2012 and often carries out raids in neighboring Kenya as retaliatory attacks for the presence of its army in Somalia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The kidnapped doctors are part of a contingent of 100 Cuban professionals\u2015including radiologists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and nephrologists\u2015who arrived in Kenya in 2018 under a bilateral agreement to improve access to specialized health services in the African country<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the kidnapping, the Kenyan authorities relocated to safer areas Cuban doctors deployed in Kenyan counties bordering Somalia, where Al-Shabaab seeks to establish a kind of Wahhabi (ultraconservative) Islamic state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the overthrow in 1991 of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, Somalia is a country shaken by conflict and chaos, without an effective government and in the hands of Islamist militias and warlords.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The two Cuban doctors kidnapped in Kenya by alleged members of the Somali jihadist group Al-Shabaab this Sunday celebrated nine months in captivity, while the Kenyan government insists that they are \u201cwell\u201d and is working on getting them released. \u201cWe know for sure that they are well, but the plan to guarantee their rescue continues.
