
{"id":212665,"date":"2020-01-22T13:32:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T18:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=212665"},"modified":"2020-01-22T13:32:20","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T18:32:20","slug":"the-cubans-hispanic-theater-in-english-on-diversity-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/theater\/the-cubans-hispanic-theater-in-english-on-diversity-in-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Cubans,\u201d Hispanic theater in English on diversity in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/emigracion-cubana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuban-American<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> playwright Michael Le\u00f3n, who this week is premiering in Miami \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d a family drama in English, believes that it is time for theater in the United States to reflect the diversity of its population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <em>EFE<\/em> news agency, Le\u00f3n said that if Latinos like him can identify with films and plays generally referring to the white majority in the United States, Anglo-Saxons can do so with works such as \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d a story about something as universal as the family and its conflicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only difference is that \u201crice with beans\u201d is served at this family\u2019s table instead of turkey and mashed potatoes, says Victoria Collado, director of \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d a Miami New Drama production that will have its premiere on January 23 at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In principle, it will be on billboard until February 16.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collado directed the great theatrical success of 2019 in Miami, \u201cAmparo,\u201d an immersion play that was on billboard for eight months and was written by the also Cuban-American Vanessa Garc\u00eda. The play was about the vicissitudes of the creators of the rum Havana Club throughout more than 60 years of Cuba\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le\u00f3n, who belongs to the first generation born in the United States of a family of Cuban origin and who is based in New York, wrote in English \u201cThe Cubans\u201d because he conceived it for \u201can American public,\u201d as he says in Spanish accompanied by Collado and actress Ashley \u00c1lvarez, his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashley, also a Cuban-American, plays \u201cChristy\u201d in \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d who lives outside of Miami, where her family is, and she wants to know where she comes from and how her identity fits in, because the Cubans who arrived in the United States after 1959 had to start from scratch and decided to \u201cerase all\u201d of the above, says Collado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChristy\u201d returns to the city for a family celebration and in the midst of discussions with her mother, who disagrees with some decisions she has made, something unexpected and shocking shakes the foundations of this family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The universality of the story in \u201cThe Cubans\u201d was successfully tested in a workshop in New York with audiences before starting rehearsals in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_212667\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212667\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-212667\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/the-cubans-efe-2-1-750x563.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-212667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The author of the play \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d Cuban-American playwright Michael Leon (c); director Victoria Collado (r), and actress Ashley \u00c1lvarez (l) during an interview with EFE news agency in Miami, Florida (USA), on January 20, 2020. Photo: Ana Mengotti \/ EFE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le\u00f3n tells EFE that in New York and in Chicago, where he also lived for a while, he felt \u201ca little frustrated\u201d because he did not see himself or his family or his community reflected in the plays that refer to current American society, \u201calmost always written by whites and men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Cubans\u201d defends that Latinos are also part of the United States, emphasizes this actor and playwright who cannot say that he \u201cis completely Cuban or completely American.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story takes place in Miami in 2016, a significant year because it began a stage of \u201cfriction\u201d in American society, although this drama does not talk about the elections or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/donald-trump-es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donald Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor is there talk about the situation in Cuba or the \u201cfervor\u201d or \u201cresentment\u201d of Cuban exiles, but it is something that underlies a story where identity plays an important role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collado points out that although there are immigrants in \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d \u201cthey don&#8217;t clean floors or are criminals.\u201d They are one more family from this country, like all families with their particularities, she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first part of Le\u00f3n&#8217;s drama is \u201ccompletely American,\u201d but the second, in which the absurd is present, is like \u201ca tribute to Cuban theater,\u201d adds Collado.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although all the characters speak in English, the viewer feels that there are some who would be more comfortable speaking in Spanish and in fact there are words and monologues in the language of Cervantes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author, the director and the actress who represents the central character consider that they are the ones who can \u201ctranslate\u201d culture and what happens in Cuba for their American compatriots, although they also talk about the \u201clegacy\u201d and the \u201ctrauma\u201d they have inherited from their relatives born on the Caribbean island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why, says Collado, they feel \u201cnostalgia for a country they have not known\u201d and that they cannot visit or tour in the same way as the children of migrants from other countries can, because \u201cit\u2019s a little different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the effect that the work can have on the public in Miami, the director points out that if they do their job \u201cwell,\u201d they will laugh and then realize that \u201cThe Cubans\u201d is about something serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe theater is a place of catharsis, a place for changes to occur,\u201d says Le\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artistic director of the work, Michel Hausmann, is convinced that \u201cthe next great American dramatic works will come from diverse and multicultural places like Miami and will be written, directed and interpreted by artists who seem and sound like our community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Cubans\u201d has a large cast, which also includes Adriana Gaviria, Ren\u00e9 Granado, Andhy M\u00e9ndez, Jezabel Montero, James Puig, Rub\u00e9n Rabasa, Vivian Ruiz and Caleb Scott, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuban-American playwright Michael Le\u00f3n, who this week is premiering in Miami \u201cThe Cubans,\u201d a family drama in English, believes that it is time for theater in the United States to reflect the diversity of its population.
