Although they were married in 2018, they have barely been able to see each other three times since then and Gonz\u00e1lez&#8217;s application for permanent residence in Canada filed shortly after the marriage has no answer yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA growing mountain of delays in the immigration system has left this Canadian-Cuban family in limbo, with no idea when they will meet again,\u201d Canada&#8217;s public television network <em>CBC <\/em><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/immigration-calgary-cuba-1.5446028?fbclid=IwAR0juD1io0lTCoasvmXTEEupdajLRoBfNe-FbCQCy9nYgg-ef_Ej0OE4mfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said this Monday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe federal government says that the average processing time in the case of a spouse living outside Canada is 12 months. Photo: cbc.ca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immigration and visa applications for Canada from Cuba have been at a standstill in the last year, since Ottawa reduced its diplomatic staff in Havana due to the strange health problems reported by Canadian and United States officials, whose cause still hasn\u2019t been determined and which Washington initially described as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/ataques-acusticos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cacoustic attacks.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last May, the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/canada-suspende-mayoria-de-servicios-consulares-en-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drastically reduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its programs and services in the Cuban capital, due to a previously announced reduction in personnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/notices\/havana-service-changes-2019.html?hootPostID=ed082b16c10810f8474c9dd770b020e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issued at that time, services for visa procedures for temporary visits, study and work permits would no longer be offered in Cuba, and permanent residence interviews were canceled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reduction quickly caused problems for the family of Silver and Gonz\u00e1lez Trenzado, when a consular appointment in May for him and his eldest son was canceled without prior notice due to embassy problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months later, the diplomatic headquarters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/canada-reinstaura-algunos-procesos-consulares-en-cuba-segun-medio-canadiense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restored some <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visa and biometric services, but it still doesn\u2019t give interviews or other procedures and the closest offices for them are outside of Cuba, in Mexico or Trinidad and Tobago. This is a challenge for Cubans, who require travel permits to enter most countries, \u201cwhich means they have to obtain a second visa just to complete the process for their Canadian applications,\u201d explains CBC News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation, similar to that suffered by Cubans who wish to emigrate or reunite with their families in the United States, does not seem to have a quick solution. It has even provoked protests by Cubans residing in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3FojTicfhg\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/canada\/cubanos-en-canada-piden-a-trudeau-reconsiderar-visados-en-la-habana\/\">Cubanos en Canad\u00e1 piden a Trudeau reconsiderar visados en La Habana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCubanos en Canad\u00e1 piden a Trudeau reconsiderar visados en La Habana\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/mundo\/canada\/cubanos-en-canada-piden-a-trudeau-reconsiderar-visados-en-la-habana\/embed\/#?secret=DTA4VXoArx#?secret=3FojTicfhg\" data-secret=\"3FojTicfhg\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early January, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen&#8217;s office told CBC News that there were no current plans to reopen further procedures in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCanada recognizes the importance of minimizing the impact on Cuban residents of reducing the service so they can continue to come to Canada,\u201d says an IRCC statement, which also states that it will continue \u201cexploring other mitigation measures and alternative service channels to improve the visa and immigration services offered to Cuban residents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>No hope on the horizon<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all these problems, Gonz\u00e1lez and his eldest son finally completed their medical exams last August in Trinidad and Tobago. \u201cSince then, there has been no news,\u201d says Silver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October they received a notice that an interview was required, either in Trinidad or Mexico, but when they request an update on the meeting schedule, their communications bounce back with the message that the voicemail and email inbox are full.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey literally try to keep you away,\u201d despairs the Canadian, who doesn\u2019t know when she will finally meet up with her husband.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if that were not enough, the increase in procedures has exceeded the budget they initially had. Photo: cbc.ca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just want to have a complete family,\u201d says the 9-year-old boy sadly: \u201cHe&#8217;s a great father&#8230;he says I&#8217;m his hero.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silver told CBC News that she doesn\u2019t blame the consular staff for the delays, but has lost faith in the Canadian authorities\u2019 promises of reuniting families like hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s a very cold, hostile and useless process,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For his part, Tito is clear about what he would say to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau if he had the opportunity to meet him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFamily is important and they don&#8217;t understand that,\u201d he says of the authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGovernment, if you are listening to this, then do something about it and quickly,\u201d concludes the child quoted by the Canadian media.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the focus of attention has mainly been about families separated between Cuba and the United States, the problems caused by the decrease in consular services on the island after the mysterious health incidents suffered by U.S. diplomats have also affected those who try to reach a little further north: Canada.
