
{"id":213454,"date":"2020-02-09T16:46:31","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T21:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=213454"},"modified":"2020-02-09T16:48:04","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T21:48:04","slug":"cuban-fishermen-will-need-authorization-as-of-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/cuban-fishermen-will-need-authorization-as-of-may\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuban fishermen will need authorization as of May"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law that will regulate fishing in Cuba, passed in July last year, was published this Friday in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gacetaoficial.gob.cu\/pdf\/GOC-2020-O11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Gaceta Oficial<\/em> Ordinaria No. 11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with a decree and seven complementary resolutions, and will come into force next May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within 180 days, people who want to carry out this activity in rivers, reservoirs or in maritime waters must obtain an official authorization, except those who fish from shorelines and without using \u201cfloating means.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decree No. 1, with the regulation of the law, establishes four fishing modalities, determined according to the purpose for which the activity is carried out: commercial, sports, recreational and research fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"QL7NxPcDxV\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/opinion\/columnas\/de-otro-costal\/memorias-de-un-marinero-cubano-una-isla-de-espaldas-al-mar\/\">Memorias de un marinero cubano: \u201cuna isla de espaldas al mar\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abMemorias de un marinero cubano: \u201cuna isla de espaldas al mar\u201d\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/opinion\/columnas\/de-otro-costal\/memorias-de-un-marinero-cubano-una-isla-de-espaldas-al-mar\/embed\/#?secret=EzyiGuKW9Y#?secret=QL7NxPcDxV\" data-secret=\"QL7NxPcDxV\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the commercial category, whose purpose is obtaining economic benefits, the categories of state commercial fishing are distinguished, carried out by specialized fishing enterprises; and non-state, carried out as self-employment, and other forms of non-state work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This modality also includes fishing for \u201csocial self-reliance,\u201d which aims to meet the needs of state entities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the capture of aquatic species for handicrafts, exhibitions, substance extraction and other purposes\u2015which do not include consumption as food\u2015are also listed as commercial fishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"41vl2nUSpM\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/pesca-al-globo-en-el-malecon-de-la-habana\/\">Pesca \u201cal globo\u201d en el Malec\u00f3n de La Habana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abPesca \u201cal globo\u201d en el Malec\u00f3n de La Habana\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/economia\/pesca-al-globo-en-el-malecon-de-la-habana\/embed\/#?secret=Ld9VKWShnc#?secret=41vl2nUSpM\" data-secret=\"41vl2nUSpM\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Licenses for the practice of non-state commercial fishing in maritime waters are mainly limited to catching fish, in accordance with the legal norm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text of the law says that those who are licensed as fishermen must pay annual fees according to the type of motors their vessels have. The owners of motorboats will pay 100 Cuban pesos (CUP) per year, and 50 the owners of rowing or sailing boats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To carry out commercial fishing in any of its categories, as well as sport and recreational fishing, people must obtain the corresponding license. Among these are lobster, crab, sponges, shrimp, eels and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The areas in which fishing activity is authorized are also governed by law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fishing is one of the most depressed economic activities in Cuba. Between 1976 and 1990 the Cuban fleet\u2019s fishing in international fishing grounds averaged 100,000 tons per year, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-02-06\/ley-de-pesca-del-ordenamiento-a-la-soberania-alimentaria-06-02-2020-23-02-00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the obsolescence of vessels and the economic crisis caused a permanent drop in the volume of catches and fish imports, to such an extent that the per capita consumption of that food on the island became one of the lowest in the continent.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The law that will regulate fishing in Cuba, passed in July last year, was published this Friday in the Gaceta Oficial Ordinaria No. 11, along with a decree and seven complementary resolutions, and will come into force next May.
