
{"id":213649,"date":"2020-02-12T13:41:56","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T18:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=213649"},"modified":"2020-02-12T13:41:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T18:41:56","slug":"crisis-and-lines-for-fuel-and-toiletries-throughout-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/crisis-and-lines-for-fuel-and-toiletries-throughout-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Crisis and lines for fuel and toiletries throughout Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba is once again experiencing fuel shortage problems that have caused long lines at gas stations throughout the country, while Cubans are also struggling these days to get toiletries and other basic products such as detergent and toilet paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The supply of diesel and gasoline has had moments of instability since last September the authorities denounced that the new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/relaciones-cuba-ee-uu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. sanctions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were hindering the arrival of oil ships to the island, but the crisis has worsened since the end of last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, and unlike what happened at the end of last year, the Cuban executive has not issued any statement to explain if new measures or restrictions will be adopted, although the managers of some gas stations are explaining to customers that they only have a limited amount of daily fuel to sell to private individuals who pay in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once that amount runs out, private individuals must wait until the next day because the rest of the supply is reserved for state vehicles and other entities that have prepaid cards.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rCdduGfTxV\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-reorganizes-transportation-in-face-of-energy-crisis\/\">Cuba &#8220;reorganizes&#8221; transportation in face of energy crisis<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba &#8220;reorganizes&#8221; transportation in face of energy crisis&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-reorganizes-transportation-in-face-of-energy-crisis\/embed\/#?secret=nuRkwfhOAY#?secret=rCdduGfTxV\" data-secret=\"rCdduGfTxV\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>The WhatsApp of solidarity<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the problems began, groups have multiplied in mobile applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram in which users share information about where there is fuel, how long the line is or where a tanker will arrive soon to supply the gas station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the information circulating in these groups, the shortage has especially affected the eastern part of the country and, in particular, Santiago de Cuba, the island\u2019s second most important city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had a full tank, today it ran out, I&#8217;m almost empty, I\u2019m forced to make the line rain or shine. If I don\u2019t fill the tank, I can\u2019t work, unfortunately it\u2019s like that,\u201d said a taxi driver who was waiting at a gas station in Havana on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">F\u00e9lix, at the same station, had been waiting for three hours to fill his vehicle\u2019s tank while affirming that things \u201care bad, really really bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2019, Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel announced that the country was facing a complicated \u201ctemporary\u201d energy situation because it had temporarily stopped receiving oil due to U.S. pressures on shipping companies to prevent the arrival of fuel to Cuba in retaliation for its support to Venezuela, its main supplier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This situation particularly affected diesel fuel and faced by that circumstance the island\u2019s government established a series of \u201cadjustment and saving measures\u201d that had a major impact on public transportation services.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vLeD5XR6rW\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/temporary-problem-or-structural-crisis-in-cuba\/\">Temporary problem or structural crisis in Cuba?<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Temporary problem or structural crisis in Cuba?&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/temporary-problem-or-structural-crisis-in-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=T9Tx8EtAm1#?secret=vLeD5XR6rW\" data-secret=\"vLeD5XR6rW\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the fuel saving measures in state transportation, others were added in the public sector like the reduction of the diesel assigned to agencies and enterprises, and the schedules for using air conditioning in government dependencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A month later, D\u00edaz-Canel considered the most critical phase of the fuel supply crisis was over and said that the island could already cover 62% of its requirements, although he said that there would still be \u201ctensions\u201d in some sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent months, Washington has applied new sanctions that have had a severe impact on the Cuban economy, in retaliation for Cuba&#8217;s alleged interference in the Venezuelan crisis and its unconditional support for President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since arriving at the White House in January 2017, President Donald Trump has reinforced the Cuba policy with reductions in diplomatic personnel, increased trade embargo, restrictions on cruises and flights, and limits on Americans\u2019 travel to the island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Detergent and toilet paper, the most sought after<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economic fluctuations that Cuba is going through have also caused problems in the supply of other products such as toiletries and cleaning items, since in the midst of the foreign currency crisis that the country is going through, the government has announced that it will give priority to fuel and food purchases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba imports each year about two-billion-dollars\u2019 worth of food products, which according to estimates correspond to 80% of its total consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A statement from the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN) on toiletries such as bath soap and toothpaste reported on the 8th that \u201cdemand and stability is not met until March, since the total amounts that support it are not available.\u201d And announced that the offer must be stabilized \u201cat appropriate levels as of April.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That information was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-02-11\/abastecimiento-de-productos-de-aseo-y-normados-en-cuba-precisiones-necesarias-11-02-2020-00-02-40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirmed this Tuesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the official newspaper <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which affirmed, citing MINCIN officials, that toiletries \u201cwill not disappear\u201d and that \u201cit is expected that there will be an improvement in the supply of these products as of April.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zOF4zbFNTx\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuban-government-denies-there-wont-be-toiletries-until-april\/\">Cuban government denies there won\u2019t be toiletries until April<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
