{"id":213870,"date":"2020-02-15T15:40:04","date_gmt":"2020-02-15T20:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=213870"},"modified":"2020-02-15T15:40:04","modified_gmt":"2020-02-15T20:40:04","slug":"new-york-university-signs-memorandum-with-cuban-ministry-of-higher-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/new-york-university-signs-memorandum-with-cuban-ministry-of-higher-education\/","title":{"rendered":"New York University signs memorandum with Cuban Ministry of Higher Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State University of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/nueva-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SUNY) and the Cuban Ministry of Higher Education (MES) signed a memorandum of understanding in the context of the Universidad 2020 International Congress, which just took place in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement \u201cwill provide new opportunities for students from both countries,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/cuba\/61200-se-acercan-cuba-y-estados-unidos-desde-la-educacion-en-universidad-2020-fotos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <em>Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN)<\/em> news agency, which specified that, as part of the agreement, \u201cexchanges will be carried out in the system of universities, such as short courses, internships, doctoral grants, masters, and lectures by academicians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sally Crimmins, associate vice rector of the SUNY Office of Global Affairs and who signed the memorandum for the U.S. institution, said that the universities have a \u201chuge responsibility\u201d in the formation of future leaders, so that they understand \u201cthe importance of relations between Cuba and the United States and work towards rapprochement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explained that her university&#8217;s links with the MES began in 2016, during the \u201cthaw\u201d between Cuba and the United States, \u201cin a climate of great optimism,\u201d and said that the work done since then \u201chas been very enriching.\u201d She also recalled that at the moment there are about 13 cooperation agreements with academic entities on the island, despite the rollback in bilateral relations after the arrival of Donald Trump to the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"X4luol0Aa8\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/noticia\/nuevo-acuerdo-universidades-nueva-york-cuba\/\">Nuevo acuerdo entre universidades de Nueva York y Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abNuevo acuerdo entre universidades de Nueva York y Cuba\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/noticia\/nuevo-acuerdo-universidades-nueva-york-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=3NVZk6EJ4H#?secret=X4luol0Aa8\" data-secret=\"X4luol0Aa8\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe reality is that the new American generation is approaching young Cubans, they are informing themselves, learning what each one&#8217;s life is like, from a social and academic focus, so that stronger relations for the future are created,\u201d argued Crimmins, who announced that SUNY is planning new collaborations in the field of renewable energies with the University of the Isla de la Juventud, and care of plants, with the National Botanical Garden, in Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also said that SUNY\u2019s agenda with the MES includes the teaching of English as a second language, in addition to agriculture programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her part, Cuban Deputy Minister of Higher Education Miriam Alp\u00edzar said that the signed memorandum shows that \u201cacademic ties have no borders, especially when the formation of the future is at stake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Universidad 2020 Congress concluded this Friday at the Havana Convention Center.
