
{"id":214035,"date":"2020-02-18T14:46:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T19:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=214035"},"modified":"2020-02-18T14:46:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T19:46:15","slug":"the-best-of-cuban-cinema-made-at-icaic-according-to-the-cinematheque-of-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/culture\/cinema\/the-best-of-cuban-cinema-made-at-icaic-according-to-the-cinematheque-of-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"The best of Cuban cinema made at ICAIC, according to the Cinematheque of Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A list with the most representative of Cuban cinema produced by the Cuban Institute of Cinema Art and Industry (ICAIC) since 1959 was published by the Cinematheque of Cuba, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the institution, responsible for the safeguarding of national film heritage.<\/p>\n<p>The survey was convened last year, when the 60th anniversary of ICAIC\u2019s foundation was celebrated, and a hundred people participated in it, including 53 national critics, researchers or journalists; 25 filmmakers or people linked to the island&#8217;s cinema and 22 foreign critics, researchers or journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The results were divided into three categories: fiction films, documentaries and animated cartoons. Another list by specialties was also formed, where the participants gave their vote to the materials with the best Screenplay, Photography Direction, Edition, Art Direction and Soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>Among the directors most represented in the voting are Tom\u00e1s Guti\u00e9rrez Alea (Tit\u00f3n) and Fernando P\u00e9rez, both with six works included in the lists, as well as documentary filmmaker Santiago \u00c1lvarez, while Humberto Sol\u00e1s also excels with five materials.<\/p>\n<p>However, the filmmaker most mentioned in the survey turns out to be Juan Padr\u00f3n, for his work in the direction of animated cartoons. The creator of the character of Elpidio Vald\u00e9s, presents ten works that include animated features, animated shorts and the well-known series <em>Elpidio<\/em>, <em>Quinoscopios<\/em>, as well as the <em>Filminutos<\/em>, the latter with other filmmakers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"jOdvTHV3JD\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cultura\/cine\/juan-padron-un-pillo-maniguero\/\">Juan Padr\u00f3n, un pillo manig\u00fcero<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; <em>Strawberry and Chocolate<\/em> (1993), by Guti\u00e9rrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tab\u00edo; <em>La muerte de un bur\u00f3crata<\/em> (1966), also by Tit\u00f3n; <em>La primera carga al machete<\/em>\u00a0(1969), by Manuel Octavio G\u00f3mez; <em>La \u00faltima cena<\/em>\u00a0(1976), by Guti\u00e9rrez Alea, and <em>La bella del Alhambra<\/em> (1989), by Enrique Pineda Barnet, shared the sixth place, among a total of 25 films in 20 positions.<\/p>\n<p>The fiction section is completed with <em>De cierta manera<\/em>\u00a0(1974), by Sara G\u00f3mez; <em>Aventuras de Juan Quinquin<\/em>\u00a0(1967), by Julio Garc\u00eda Espinosa; <em>Conducta<\/em> (2014), by Ernesto Daranas; <em>Portrait of Teresa<\/em> (1979), by Pastor Vega; <em>Madagascar<\/em> (1994), and <em>Clandestinos<\/em> (1987), both by Fernando P\u00e9rez; <em>Papeles secundarios<\/em>\u00a0(1989), by Orlando Rojas; <em>Los sobrevivientes<\/em> (1978), by Guti\u00e9rrez Alea; <em>El hombre de Maisinic\u00fa\u00a0<\/em>(1973), by Manuel P\u00e9rez; <em>Soy Cuba<\/em> (1964), co-production with the former Soviet Union, directed by Mikhail Kalatozov; <em>Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, el ojo del canario<\/em>\u00a0(2010), by Fernando P\u00e9rez; and <em>Plaff<\/em> or <em>Demasiado miedo a la vida<\/em> (1988), by Juan Carlos Tab\u00edo.<\/p>\n<p>It closes with<em> Las doce sillas<\/em> (1962), by Tit\u00f3n, and <em>La vida es silbar<\/em> (1998), by Fernando P\u00e9rez; <em>Cecilia<\/em> (1982), by Sol\u00e1s; <em>Video de familia<\/em> (2001), by Humberto Padr\u00f3n; and two titles of the authorship of Sol\u00e1s in the last position: <em>Manuela<\/em> (1966) and <em>Un hombre de \u00e9xito<\/em>\u00a0(1986).<\/p>\n<p>The documentaries are headed by <em>Suite Habana<\/em> (2003), by Fernando P\u00e9rez, together with <em>Now!<\/em> (1965), by Santiago \u00c1lvarez; followed by <em>Por primera vez<\/em>\u00a0 (1967), by Octavio Cort\u00e1zar; <em>Vaqueros del Cauto<\/em> (1965), by Oscar Vald\u00e9s; <em>Ociel del Toa<\/em> (1965), by Nicol\u00e1s Guill\u00e9n Landri\u00e1n; <em>Nosotros, la m\u00fasica<\/em>\u00a0 (1964), a feature directed by Rogelio Paris; <em>Hanoi, martes 13<\/em>\u00a0 (1967) and <em>Cicl\u00f3n<\/em> (1963), by Santiago \u00c1lvarez; <em>Coffea Ar\u00e1biga<\/em> (1968), by Guill\u00e9n Landri\u00e1n; <em>Historia de un ballet<\/em> (1962), by Jos\u00e9 Massip; and <em>79 primaveras<\/em>\u00a0 (1969), <em>L.B.J.<\/em> (1968) and <em>Mi hermano Fidel<\/em> (1977), these three by Santiago \u00c1lvarez.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining that were chosen were <em>Muerte y vida en El Morrillo<\/em>\u00a0(1971), by Oscar Vald\u00e9s; <em>\u00a1Viva la Rep\u00fablica!<\/em>\u00a0(1972), by Pastor Vega; <em>Una isla para Miguel<\/em>\u00a0(1968), by Sara G\u00f3mez; <em>El fanguito<\/em> (1990), by Jorge Luis S\u00e1nchez; <em>Hombres de Mal Tiempo<\/em> (1968), by the Argentine Alejandro Saderman; and <em>Gir\u00f3n<\/em> (1972), a feature documentary by Manuel Herrera; <em>En la otra isla<\/em>\u00a0(1968), by Sara G\u00f3mez; <em>Simparel\u00e9<\/em> (1974), by Humberto Sol\u00e1s; <em>Mujer ante el espejo<\/em> (1983), by Marisol Trujillo; <em>Cayita, una leyenda, Cayita, una gesta<\/em> (1980), by Luis Felipe Bernaza and this section ends with <em>Kid Chocolate<\/em> (1987), by Gerardo Chijona.<\/p>\n<p>The well-known <em>\u00a1Vampiros en La Habana!<\/em> (1985), by Juan Padr\u00f3n, heads the animated cartoons section, which also includes the series <em>Elpidio Vald\u00e9s<\/em> (1974-2015) and <em>Filminutos<\/em> (1980-2006), and the animated feature <em>Elpidio Vald\u00e9s contra d\u00f3lar y ca\u00f1\u00f3n<\/em> (1983).<\/p>\n<p>The list continues with <em>20 a\u00f1os<\/em>\u00a0(2009), by B\u00e1rbaro Joel Ortiz; the <em>Quinoscopios<\/em> series (1985-1987), and the short <em>\u00a1Viva papi!<\/em> (1982), both by Padr\u00f3n; the feature <em>Me\u00f1ique<\/em> (2014), by Ernesto Padr\u00f3n; <em>El boh\u00edo<\/em> (1984), by Mario Rivas; <em>La luna en el jard\u00edn<\/em> (2012), co-directed by Adanoe Lima and Yemel\u00ed Cruz; and <em>M\u00e1s vampiros en La Habana<\/em> (2003), by Juan Padr\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Three by Tulio Raggi follow: <em>El paso del Yabebir\u00ed<\/em>,\u00a0<em>El alma tr\u00e9mula y sola<\/em>\u00a0 and the series <em>El negrito cimarr\u00f3n<\/em> (1975-2010); the short <em>La silla<\/em> (1974) and the first animated feature in the history of Cuban cinema, <em>Elpidio Vald\u00e9s<\/em> (1979), both by Juan Padr\u00f3n; <em>Un sue\u00f1o en el parque<\/em> (1965), by Luis Rogelio Nogueras; <em>A Norman McLaren<\/em> (1990), by Manuel Marcel, the feature <em>Mafalda<\/em> (1994), by Padr\u00f3n; the <em>Matojo<\/em> series (1981-1985), directed by Manuel Lamar (Lillo); and this category closes with <em>La prensa seria<\/em> (1960) and <em>El cowboy<\/em> (1962), by Jes\u00fas de Armas;
