He had a literacy program. At that time, many people in Cuba were illiterate and he formed the Literacy Brigade&#8230;and they left and helped people learn to read and write. You know what? I think teaching people to read and write is a good thing,\u201d said Sanders.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/fave.api.cnn.io\/v1\/fav\/?video=politics\/2020\/02\/25\/bernie-sanders-castro-cuba-truth-is-truth-south-carolina-town-hall-vpx.cnn&amp;customer=cnn&amp;edition=international&amp;env=prod\" width=\"416\" height=\"234\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cI\u2019ve been extremely consistent and critical with all authoritarian regimes around the world, including Cuba, including Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, China and Russia. I believe in democracy, not authoritarianism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The controversy arose from statements made by Sanders during <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/bernie-sanders-its-unfair-to-say-everythings-bad-in-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview<\/a> on the CBS \u201c60 Minutes\u201d program that was broadcast on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>On that occasion the Democrat praised a \u201cliteracy program\u201d that the Cuban government launched in its early years and said that \u201cit\u2019s unfair to say everything\u2019s bad\u201d in Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic presidential candidate also rejected the criticism he received from congressmen from both parties, fundamentally linked to the Florida or Cuban origin policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is the truth, and that is what happened in the early years of Castro&#8217;s regime.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bernie Sanders, Cuba y una fuerte pol\u00e9mica en medio de la campa\u00f1a\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n5udieilndI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Sanders describes himself as a democratic socialist.
