I can assure you that we will continue to act here with our own constructive voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cuba formed part of this intergovernmental body in two consecutive periods (2014-2016 and 2017-2019), after which the regulation did not allow another re-election.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s main ally in Latin America, <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/venezuela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Venezuela<\/a>, has just returned to the Human Rights Council, following an election that generated condemnation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/estados-unidos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States<\/a> and other Western countries, as well as from prestigious international NGOs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cuba<\/a> seguir\u00e1 conduci\u00e9ndose con voz propia y constructiva, con su experiencia de pa\u00eds en desarrollo defensor del di\u00e1logo y la cooperaci\u00f3n, contrario a los enfoques punitivos y la selectividad, en favor de la promoci\u00f3n y protecci\u00f3n de todos los derechos humanos para todos.| <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HRC43?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HRC43<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LAX6Z4MzNW\">pic.twitter.com\/LAX6Z4MzNW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bruno Rodr\u00edguez P (@BrunoRguezP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrunoRguezP\/status\/1232301349083197440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The biggest criticism was that a government accused of suppressing its opponents, as well as having led the country into a humanitarian crisis, was being given a seat on the Council. Several countries accuse the Cuban government of the same.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Minister Rodr\u00edguez denounced in his speech before the Council the measures with which the U.S. government has intensified in recent months the blockade of the island and that particularly affect its access to fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intensification of the blockade against Cuba is an act of genocide, a flagrant, massive and systematic violation of human rights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the strengthening of the sanctions has been \u201cqualitative\u201d and asked the world not to remain \u201cinert to the U.S. threat to crush Venezuela, destabilize Nicaragua or destroy other nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On one of the most pressing problems faced by Cubans these days and that has to do with fuel shortages, the foreign minister acknowledged that the sanctions have managed to \u201cdamage every area of \u200b\u200bpeople&#8217;s daily lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Public transportation, education, health and food are suffering from its devastating effects, he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"fA710Ib75L\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/crisis-and-lines-for-fuel-and-toiletries-throughout-cuba\/\">Crisis and lines for fuel and toiletries throughout Cuba<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Crisis and lines for fuel and toiletries throughout Cuba&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/crisis-and-lines-for-fuel-and-toiletries-throughout-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=wV56NVAXqJ#?secret=fA710Ib75L\" data-secret=\"fA710Ib75L\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the last six months there have been interruptions in the supply of oil (mainly from Venezuela) to Cuba, a situation that the island\u2019s authorities attribute to U.S. pressure on shipping companies and insurers to prevent the arrival of crude oil.<\/p>\n<p>The diesel and gasoline restrictions add to the shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which would be directly affecting 1.7 million families, according to government data.<\/p>\n<p>The delicate financial situation has also been reflected in other areas such as tourism, and has caused shortages in toiletries and medicines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuba will try to again occupy one of the 47 seats on the UN Human Rights Council, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez Parrilla announced this Tuesday.
