{"id":214629,"date":"2020-02-28T09:52:25","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T14:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=214629"},"modified":"2020-02-28T09:52:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-28T14:52:25","slug":"cuba-develops-new-drugs-against-cancer-and-other-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-develops-new-drugs-against-cancer-and-other-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba develops new drugs against cancer and other diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cuban scientists are working on several new drugs against cancer and other diseases, such as cardiovascular ailments and rheumatoid arthritis, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-02-27\/los-medicamentos-mas-novedosos-que-se-investigan-y-desarrollan-en-cuba-27-02-2020-00-02-50?fbclid=IwAR0EOeeDf816pU5xTY_Viwb6lZUnWG5KuufZDYsLJJ7U-kAgA-LMnXXnUoA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Granma<\/a><\/em> newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>The BioCubaFarma group is currently carrying out 102 projects, of which 75 have a Cuban patent, explained Rolando P\u00e9rez, director of Science and Innovation of this state conglomerate dedicated to the production of medicines, medical equipment and high-tech services.<\/p>\n<p>The HerberSavax therapeutic vaccine\u2015one of the leading products in the oncology area\u2015is in phase III clinical trials in ovarian tumors and hepatocarcinoma, which is the most common type of liver cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), a leading entity in this field on the island, the vaccine reduces the formation of blood vessels in the tumor, thereby limiting the supply of nutrients and oxygen and inhibiting its growth and shows \u201cencouraging results\u201d in some patients.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ulFwKxRgaH\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/sociedad\/cuba-y-estados-unidos-tienen-prioridades-similares-en-salud\/\">Cuba y Estados Unidos tienen \u201cprioridades similares\u201d en salud<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abCuba y Estados Unidos tienen \u201cprioridades similares\u201d en salud\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/sociedad\/cuba-y-estados-unidos-tienen-prioridades-similares-en-salud\/embed\/#?secret=G0xUC5xtxK#?secret=ulFwKxRgaH\" data-secret=\"ulFwKxRgaH\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>For its part, a biopharmaceutical created at the Molecular Immunology Center is about to begin a phase I clinical trial in patients with solid tumors. According to P\u00e9rez, it is a product of the field of cancer immunotherapy, in which intensive research is being carried out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have five other products in development in the initial stages of clinical trials, of which two are therapeutic vaccines, two antitumor peptides and a monoclonal antibody,\u201d he told <em>Granma<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The director of Science and Innovation of BioCubaFarma also referred to a novel drug, the immunomodulatory peptide called cigb814, to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a disease that causes a high degree of disability.<\/p>\n<p>Another product being developed is the cigb500 peptide, which has shown a powerful cardioprotective activity, according to the specialist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe phase I clinical trial demonstrated the safety of the drug. Among its most recognized medicines are Heberprot-P, a successful therapy to treat diabetic foot ulcers registered in more than 20 countries, of which Havana\u2019s CIGB is now working on new formulations.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the CIMAVAX-EGF vaccine against lung cancer and the Heberferon for the treatment of skin cancer, as well as vaccines against hepatitis B and meningitis and the recombinant Interferon alfa 2B antiviral (IFNrec), which is among the drugs chosen by China to treat COVID-19 coronavirus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuban scientists are working on several new drugs against cancer and other diseases, such as cardiovascular ailments and rheumatoid arthritis, Granma newspaper reported.
