{"id":215339,"date":"2020-03-11T15:52:32","date_gmt":"2020-03-11T19:52:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=215339"},"modified":"2020-03-11T15:52:32","modified_gmt":"2020-03-11T19:52:32","slug":"dollar-store-network-continues-growing-in-cuba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/dollar-store-network-continues-growing-in-cuba\/","title":{"rendered":"Dollar store network continues growing in Cuba"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The network of stores selling in dollars and other freely convertible currencies (FCC) has continued to grow in Cuba since <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/el-disparo-de-arranque-de-las-tiendas-en-dolares-de-la-habana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the opening of the first stores<\/a> in late October, Cuban media confirmed this Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>After starting with just a few stores in Havana and Santiago de Cuba, 76 currently operate throughout the island, as well as 10 virtual stores. In addition, the opening of new shopping centers and the incorporation of hardware, computer, high standard furniture and professional gastronomic equipment lines are planned, the official <em>Granma<\/em> newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-03-10\/tiendas-en-mlc-de-la-estabilidad-a-la-ampliacion-de-las-ofertas-10-03-2020-00-03-50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, officials of the state chains that make up the network \u2015Cimex, Tiendas Caribe and Empresa de Servicios Automotores s.a. (Sasa)\u2015 acknowledged that it has not been possible to stabilize the offers of \u201ccertain high-demand products,\u201d such as splits, freezers and electric motorcycles; although, they said, \u201cthere is already a greater presence of these assortments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosario Ferrer San Emeterio, commercial vice president of the Cimex Corporation, explained that these \u201cshortfalls in supply\u201d were due to \u201csales being much higher\u201d than initially planned, despite which, and \u201cin general,\u201d \u201cthe planned objectives have been met\u201d and \u201cthe collection of income has been satisfactory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The official affirmed that \u201cmeasures have been taken to expand the capacities in the stores, to readjust the conformations of the containers and contracts have increased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new contracts \u201cguarantee the arrival of sufficient merchandise to support the continuity of the commercialization\u201d, said Ferrer San Emeterio, who stated that \u201cthe volumes that must arrive in the months of March and April exceed the monthly sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8UIKMwCRJz\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/tiendas-en-sancti-spiritus-recaudan-mas-de-360-000-dolares-en-diez-dias\/\">Tiendas en Sancti Sp\u00edritus recaudan m\u00e1s de 360.000 d\u00f3lares en diez d\u00edas<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abTiendas en Sancti Sp\u00edritus recaudan m\u00e1s de 360.000 d\u00f3lares en diez d\u00edas\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/tiendas-en-sancti-spiritus-recaudan-mas-de-360-000-dolares-en-diez-dias\/embed\/#?secret=GlL9HwUsqP#?secret=8UIKMwCRJz\" data-secret=\"8UIKMwCRJz\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These are, according to the directive, \u201cdurable products,\u201d whose demand \u201cshould be more moderate.\u201d Still, she explained that new assortments should be incorporated, including hardware, computers \u2015whose sales should start at the end of March\u2015, power plants, surveillance camera systems, cold rooms, metal carpentry, power tools and others \u201cthat respond to customer requests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amilkar Odel\u00edn, commercial director of the Tiendas Caribe chain, when speaking about expansion, explained that although they initially worked with nearby suppliers, they have currently hired the services of other manufacturers, which although it makes the process \u201ca little more delayed,\u201d it also makes it possible \u201cto expand the assortment in quantities, well-known brands and models.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also referred to the incorporation into these stores of products made in Cuba, including motorcycles and mopeds, while they undertook negotiations to sell sanitary furniture, ceramics, kitchens and the demanded splits.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the Automotive Services Company s.a. (Sasa) \u2015which sells auto parts and other automotive assortments and that today has four stores for sale in FCC only in Havana\u2015 plans to expand to the entire country and will \u201cimmediately\u201d do so in Villa Clara, Camag\u00fcey, Holgu\u00edn and Santiago de Cuba provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Yadira Torres, commercial director of Sasa, also acknowledged having faced \u201csetbacks\u201d with supplies, especially those of high-demand products such as motorcycle units, but said that \u201cin the second half of March the commercialization of this assortment must be restored, for which the required guarantees exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that her chain has also \u201cprioritized\u201d the contracting of small-format hand tools and paints, which \u201cshould already be available on the web as of April.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sale of various items in FCC in these stores \u2015mainly home appliances and <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/sale-of-second-hand-cars-at-high-prices-kicks-off-in-cuba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automotive<\/a>\u2015 is done through magnetic cards linked to bank accounts in dollars and other foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p>It is a Cuban government measure, taken fifteen years after the elimination of dollar circulation on the island \u2015in order to boost the economy, affected by U.S. sanctions and the crisis in Venezuela\u2015, to alleviate its financing difficulties and avoid the flight of foreign currency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The network of stores selling in dollars and other freely convertible currencies (FCC) has continued to grow in Cuba since the opening of the first stores in late October, Cuban media confirmed this Tuesday.
