{"id":217638,"date":"2020-04-18T16:46:18","date_gmt":"2020-04-18T20:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=217638"},"modified":"2020-04-18T16:46:18","modified_gmt":"2020-04-18T20:46:18","slug":"electricity-consumption-in-cuba-skyrockets-in-times-of-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/electricity-consumption-in-cuba-skyrockets-in-times-of-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Electricity consumption in Cuba skyrockets in times of pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/energia-electrica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Electricity consumption<\/a> has skyrocketed in Cuba during the month of April, which generated an alert from the Cuban authorities to the population to encourage energy saving.<\/p>\n<p>In the first weeks of this month, \u201cthe demand for electric power has exceeded what is normally consumed in the summer months,\u201d the official <em>Granma<\/em> daily <a href=\"http:\/\/www.granma.cu\/cuba\/2020-04-16\/en-tiempos-de-quedarse-en-casa-un-llamado-al-uso-racional-de-energia-electrica-16-04-2020-23-04-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The publication indicates that, according to the National Energy Council, \u201cwhat was planned for the mid-day peak at the country level, at this stage of the year, is not being met by 20.6%, a figure that represents 421 megawatts above the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also affirms that \u201cat the national level the plan is not being fulfilled by 5.3%, which represents an overconsumption of 9,516 tons of fuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is taking place at a time when a greater number of people remain at home during these hours, as a result of the measures adopted by the government to confront the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>These include the suspension of classes and non-essential work activities, as well as events and public transportation, which makes many Cubans spend more time at home, something that, in addition, the government itself has insisted as a preventive measure.<\/p>\n<p>Added to this are the high temperatures recorded so far in April, unusual for this period of the year, including two absolute national records\u2015the last of them 39.7 degrees Celsius\u2015and other records for several territories on the island.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"50AB3FAvyu\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/el-fin-de-semana-mas-caluroso-de-cuba-record-de-temperatura-maxima-superado-dos-veces\/\">\u00bfEl fin de semana m\u00e1s caluroso de Cuba? R\u00e9cord de temperatura m\u00e1xima superado dos veces\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/el-fin-de-semana-mas-caluroso-de-cuba-record-de-temperatura-maxima-superado-dos-veces\/embed\/#?secret=n7j00OytXk#?secret=50AB3FAvyu\" data-secret=\"50AB3FAvyu\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Given the increase in electricity demand, the authorities are analyzing \u201cthe measures that could be adopted to decrease these figures,\u201d particularly in the residential sector, \u201ctaking into account that it is in homes where the highest consumption is reported, with values \u200b\u200bof 68%,\u201d according to <em>Granma<\/em>, which does not specify the measures analyzed.<\/p>\n<p>However, the daily provides a worrying clue in its report\u2019s caption, in which it is stated that \u201cCuban households must increase electricity saving measures to avoid annoying blackouts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this sense, <em>Granma<\/em> quotes statements by Minister of Energy and Mines Liv\u00e1n Nicol\u00e1s Arronte, who urged the population \u201cto shift the times for cooking food in the home and balance domestic activities so that not all of them are carried out at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also points out that the historic Commander Ramiro Vald\u00e9s, deputy prime minister of the country, called \u201cfor the control and rational use of energy at a time when the entire country is focused on facing the pandemic\u201d and said that \u201cit is not just creating awareness, but translating it into results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he emphasized \u201cthe fight against illegalities in the sector and to implement best practices and experiences, many of them applied in the fuel contingency of September 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that time, in the second half of last year, the island had to adopt a group of measures in the face of the fuel deficit suffered by the increase in sanctions by the United States government.
