{"id":218068,"date":"2020-04-26T11:23:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-26T15:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=218068"},"modified":"2020-04-26T11:23:38","modified_gmt":"2020-04-26T15:23:38","slug":"cuba-developing-its-own-version-of-an-antiretroviral-for-use-in-coronavirus-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-developing-its-own-version-of-an-antiretroviral-for-use-in-coronavirus-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba developing its own version of an antiretroviral for use in coronavirus patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cuba is developing, with \u201csatisfactory\u201d preliminary results, its own version of the antiviral Kaletra, with the aim of eliminating its import and guaranteeing a stable supply of the drug, created to treat HIV-AIDS and now used in <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a> patients.<\/p>\n<p>The Cuban retroviral prototype, a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, is still \u201cin the development stage,\u201d although the first tests have already yielded \u201csatisfactory preliminary results,\u201d one of the leaders of the research at the state MedSol laboratories said to the <em>Agencia Cubana de Noticias<\/em> news agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree pilot batches have already been prepared, the physical chemical analysis has been carried out and then the comparison will be made with the leading product,\u201d explained Adalberto Izquierdo, head of the research and development group of the Novatec enterprise, belonging to MedSol.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"shXL2rJV5b\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-has-medicines-for-thousands-of-possible-cases-of-covid-19\/\">Cuba has medicines for thousands of possible cases of COVID-19<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba has medicines for thousands of possible cases of COVID-19&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/cuba-has-medicines-for-thousands-of-possible-cases-of-covid-19\/embed\/#?secret=U4ys7EZYWg#?secret=shXL2rJV5b\" data-secret=\"shXL2rJV5b\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The successful production of the antiretroviral in Cuba would save the island money and time, under the restrictions of the United States embargo, which hinders the acquisition of goods abroad, including medicines and medical devices that have more than 10% U.S. components.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cuban specialists, this version of the drug could \u201ceven be exported\u201d in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>However, to produce it, Cuba must first overcome several obstacles, including the absence of \u201cthe heating machine that fuses the two active principles\u201d of the antiviral. \u201cThe country does not have that device,\u201d said Izquierdo.<\/p>\n<p>The solution requires \u201cadaptations in Cuban technology\u201d that allow the prestigious Cuban biopharmaceutical industry to produce a drug with the \u201csame quality specifications as the leading product,\u201d manufactured by the American AbbVie Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Kaletra is the trade name of the antiviral composed of a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, used successfully in the treatment of HIV-AIDS. Among its adverse effects are digestive discomfort and diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>Although it has not yet been scientifically proven that any of the existing drugs cure or prevent the spread of COVID-19, Kaletra is one of the most widely used to treat the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Cuba also includes it in its protocol against the new coronavirus, which has already accumulated 1,337 positive cases and 51 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Cuban antiviral Interferon Alfa 2B was one of the drugs used by China in the beginning of the pandemic, which motivated at least 15 countries in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia to request information or supply of the drug.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Bx02jvXCaL\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/interferon-uno-de-los-farmacos-en-estudio-impulsado-por-la-oms-contra-coronavirus\/\">Interfer\u00f3n, uno de los f\u00e1rmacos en estudio impulsado por la OMS contra coronavirus<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abInterfer\u00f3n, uno de los f\u00e1rmacos en estudio impulsado por la OMS contra coronavirus\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/interferon-uno-de-los-farmacos-en-estudio-impulsado-por-la-oms-contra-coronavirus\/embed\/#?secret=YS0fyjaU65#?secret=Bx02jvXCaL\" data-secret=\"Bx02jvXCaL\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Without offering concrete figures, the state BioCubaFarma group assured that they had enough stocks of the antiretroviral to cover demand inside and outside the country.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Cuba\u2019s chronic shortages, attributed in part to the U.S. embargo and that also affects its pharmaceutical industry, the BioCubaFarma officials insisted that the 22 drugs that are considered to be able to help treat the coronavirus in one way or another are guaranteed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuba is developing, with \u201csatisfactory\u201d preliminary results, its own version of the antiviral Kaletra, with the aim of eliminating its import and guaranteeing a stable supply of the drug, created to treat HIV-AIDS and now used in COVID-19 patients.
