{"id":223761,"date":"2020-07-01T18:20:37","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T22:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=223761"},"modified":"2020-07-01T18:21:24","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T22:21:24","slug":"u-s-diplomat-says-trumps-approach-to-cuba-is-feckless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-diplomat-says-trumps-approach-to-cuba-is-feckless\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. diplomat says Trump\u2019s approach to Cuba is feckless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/contribute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Help us keep OnCuba alive here<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey DeLaurentis, the U.S. diplomat who supervised the Barack Obama administration (2009-2017) normalization process of <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/relaciones-cuba-ee-uu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relations<\/a> with Cuba, pointed out that the current policy towards the island is \u201cfeckless\u201d and based on \u201cdomestic politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeLaurentis regretted this Tuesday in an editorial published in the <em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/article243894392.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Herald<\/a><\/u><\/em> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/donald-trump-es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donald Trump<\/a> administration is deporting Cubans seeking asylum in the United States, limiting the ability of Cuban-Americans to send remittances to the island and restricting trade opportunities and travel.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"XlWfjEmnwe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-deports-119-cubans-the-second-group-during-trump-administration\/\">U.S. deports 119 Cubans, the second group during Trump administration<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;U.S. deports 119 Cubans, the second group during Trump administration&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/u-s-deports-119-cubans-the-second-group-during-trump-administration\/embed\/#?secret=XNwGe53qJr#?secret=XlWfjEmnwe\" data-secret=\"XlWfjEmnwe\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe administration\u2019s hypocrisy is breathtaking,\u201d wrote the diplomat, who led the U.S. legation in Cuba between 2014 and 2017.<\/p>\n<p>He criticized that those who direct the \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d policy towards Cuba know it will not lead to a regime change, that rather \u201cit strengthens Cuba\u2019s (and Iran\u2019s) hand in Venezuela, with Russia and China occupying the vacuum we left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He regretted that \u201cthey nevertheless continue down this path, trying to manipulate an important political bloc understandably frustrated and impatient for change on the island they love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeLaurentis was a key actor in the bilateral rapprochement process initiated in December 2014 by former President Obama and Cuban President Ra\u00fal Castro, which took a complete turn under the administration of Republican Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomat called the current government\u2019s approach \u201ca hollow imitation of a policy that failed the United States for nearly 60 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, hardliners in Cuba smile from ear to ear. They know how to deal with this playbook exceedingly well; it is far more comfortable for them than engagement,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"rQSeHHZKWH\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/cuba-u-s-relations-a-five-year-chronology-of-the-thaw\/\">Cuba-U.S. relations: A five-year chronology of the \u201cthaw\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Cuba-U.S. relations: A five-year chronology of the \u201cthaw\u201d&#8221; &#8212; OnCubaNews English\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba-usa\/cuba-u-s-relations-a-five-year-chronology-of-the-thaw\/embed\/#?secret=wDOKApGSWg#?secret=rQSeHHZKWH\" data-secret=\"rQSeHHZKWH\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With the reestablishment of bilateral relations and the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba in July 2015, DeLaurentis became Charge d\u2019Affaires.<\/p>\n<p>Obama formally nominated him as ambassador to Cuba in September 2016, but the Republican opposition, which controlled both Houses of Congress, declined to put that appointment to a vote, and DeLaurentis was never confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>DeLaurentis stressed in the editorial that Obama\u2019s policy increased the flow of information to, from, and within Cuba, and that Cuba\u2019s private sector, which now represents 15% of the GDP, was dynamic and growing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving conditions for the Cuban people, especially those courageous enough to venture into burgeoning private enterprises, were improving. Mentalities were changing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further affirmed that anyone who thinks they will be compensated through a lawsuit under Title III of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/helms-burton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helms-Burton Act<\/a>, which now allows these processes in U.S. courts for property confiscated on
