Learn more <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pn2pImdTAC\">https:\/\/t.co\/Pn2pImdTAC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; NIH (@NIH) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NIH\/status\/1283149805162618881?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 14, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The experimental vaccine has been developed at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and by Moderna Inc.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers developed what are known as neutralizing antibodies in the bloodstream\u2015key molecules to block infections\u2015at levels comparable to those found in people who survived COVID-19, the research team reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2022483?query=featured_home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a basic component needed to move forward with trials that could determine if the vaccine protects against infection,\u201d said Dr. Lisa Jackson of the Kaiser Permanente Washington Research Institute in Seattle, who was in charge of the study.<\/p>\n<p>There were no serious side effects. But more than half of the study participants reported reactions similar to those caused by other vaccines, such as fatigue, headache, chills, fever, and pain where they were injected. In three participants who received the highest dose, these reactions were more severe, which is why that dose will not be sought.<\/p>\n<p>Some reactions are similar to coronavirus symptoms, but are temporary, lasting about a day and occurring just after the injection, the researchers noted.<\/p>\n<p>There is no guarantee, but the government hopes to have results by the end of the year, which would be record speed in developing a vaccine.
