It seeks to raise more foreign currency at a time when Cuba has received a severe blow to its main sources of income, particularly tourism, as a result of the current international situation and the increase in the U.S. embargo.<\/p>\n<p>Its elimination will come into effect on Monday July 20 and is part of a package of measures, many of them identified in previous programmatic documents, but slowed down or not carried out to date, that seeks to alleviate the complex economic situation the island is going through, aggravated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Also part of the package is the opening of new stores for retail sale in freely convertible currency in 72 establishments throughout the country and which will also begin their services next Monday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acn.cu\/economia\/67574-tiendas-en-mlc-a-partir-del-lunes-en-todo-el-pais-como-parte-de-nuevas-medidas-economicas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the <em>Agencia Cubana de Noticias (ACN)<\/em> news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The new stores will sell food, toiletries and other mid-range and high-end items, through debit cards associated with bank accounts, and will join the existing ones that since the end of last year have sold electrical appliances, electric motorcycles and parts for cars, among other products.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3iuNRqhgPj\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/el-disparo-de-arranque-de-las-tiendas-en-dolares-de-la-habana\/\">Comenzaron a vender las tiendas en d\u00f3lares de La Habana<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abComenzaron a vender las tiendas en d\u00f3lares de La Habana\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/el-disparo-de-arranque-de-las-tiendas-en-dolares-de-la-habana\/embed\/#?secret=D5yjzOmoce#?secret=3iuNRqhgPj\" data-secret=\"3iuNRqhgPj\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This and other measures were approved this Thursday in an extraordinary session of the Council of Ministers, as part of a strategy called \u201ceconomic-social strategy to boost the economy and deal with the world crisis caused by COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the Mesa Redonda television program, Minister of Economy and Planning Alejandro Gil Fern\u00e1ndez explained that it had been decided to withdraw the application of the 10% tax on cash dollars entering the banking system, which, he said, \u201cbenefits both Cubans who live here and those abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said that this was approved \u201ceven in the midst of hostility and the intensification of the U.S. economic and commercial blockade against Cuba.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat allows for giving the dollar more purchasing power, because it would no longer face the 10% tax deduction when depositing them in the banking system,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The elimination of the tax on the U.S. dollar and the opening of retail stores in foreign currencies are part of a broader plan by the Cuban government, which involves \u201ctransformations\u201d of its structures and changes in \u201cstrategies that don\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"qme\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CimexInforma?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CimexInforma<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GM2pJzctUc\">pic.twitter.com\/GM2pJzctUc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
