
{"id":225058,"date":"2020-07-26T12:48:36","date_gmt":"2020-07-26T16:48:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/?p=225058"},"modified":"2020-07-26T12:53:31","modified_gmt":"2020-07-26T16:53:31","slug":"cuba-opens-door-to-gm-crops-amid-food-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/en\/cuba\/economy\/cuban-economy\/cuba-opens-door-to-gm-crops-amid-food-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba opens door to GM crops amid food crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba officially opened this Thursday the door to transgenic crops as a \u201ccomplement to conventional agriculture,\u201d in the midst of a food crisis and shortages now worsened by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/tag\/coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island, where work is underway to obtain genetically modified seeds since 2008, will apply this alternative to maize and soybeans, among other foods, which could also include sugarcane in search of a variety resistant to the effects of climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCuba is seeking to use this technology for the purposes of sustainable development and not with practices that in other contexts have had an environmental impact,\u201d said the deputy minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), Armando Rodr\u00edguez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decree law of the National Commission for the Use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Cuban Agriculture, published in the island\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaceta Oficial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, regulates the \u201ccontrolled inclusion\u201d and the research, development, production, use, import and export of GMO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This provision will ensure that the application of this technology \u201chas an adequate risk assessment, following the principles of precaution, transparency in handling, communication of information and ethical-scientific responsibility,\u201d Deputy Minister Rodr\u00edguez explained to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cubadebate.cu\/noticias\/2020\/07\/23\/adopta-cuba-disposicion-juridica-para-el-uso-de-organismos-geneticamente-modificados-en-la-agricultura\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cubadebate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0official website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba imports more than 80% of the food consumed by its 11.2 million inhabitants. clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u00abDel surco a la mesa: quitar trabas y trabadores de la producci\u00f3n de alimentos en Cuba\u00bb \u2014 OnCubaNews\" src=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/opinion\/columnas\/contrapesos\/del-surco-a-la-mesa-quitar-trabas-y-trabadores-de-la-produccion-de-alimentos-en-cuba\/embed\/#?secret=stiVlTMmhj#?secret=Ql69WZe4Ke\" data-secret=\"Ql69WZe4Ke\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>Complement to traditional agriculture<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re not saying that (transgenic technology) is the only way, but that it is one more alternative, a complement to conventional agriculture, and its link with the moment the country is going through is very important,\u201d said the deputy minister of CITMA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Cuban case, the government indicates that the use of GM crops would also be related to Tarea Vida, a state program to face climate change and its effects, as in the case of soil salinization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authorities, however, have warned that the entry into force of the decree law will not mean \u201can explosion in the use of GMOs,\u201d but that it \u201cwill start based on scientific and feasibility evaluations, with a coherent and transparent mechanism of approval.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deputy Minister Rodr\u00edguez also indicated that a \u201cunique and differentiated system of traceability and labeling of genetically modified organisms prior to their marketing, as well as the labeling of products that contain or composed of GMOs or have been produced from these organisms\u201d will be established.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fidel Castro\u2019s warnings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1996, scientists from the Cuban Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology obtained the first transgenic plants produced in a Cuban laboratory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fact that trials to grow GM maize in Cuba began in 2009, genetically modified foods still carry a stigma on the island, in part due to repeated warnings by the late former President Fidel Castro (1926-2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its study and introduction in the country has taken place without much media attention, in contrast to promoting the benefits of organic products.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"oqoSLotNFE\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/oncubanews.com\/cuba\/sociedad-cuba\/historia\/crean-centro-para-proyectos-experimentales-de-fidel-castro\/\">Crean centro para \u201cproyectos experimentales\u201d de Fidel Castro<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; GMOs, which are cultivated to produce proteins and fats of animal origin, is not suitable for human consumption,\u201d Castro wrote in a letter published by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:
