Cuban-American Mauricio Claver-Carone<\/a>, advisor for the Americas to U.S. President Donald Trump and defender of the roll back in relations between Cuba and the U.S., was elected this Saturday as the new president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). On October 1 he will become the first leader of the institution who doesn\u2019t come from Latin America.<\/p>\n

Claver-Carone, who for two years was the visible face of Trump\u2019s policy towards the Latin American region, took over the reins of the institution in a secret and online vote of the IDB\u2019s Board of Governors, to which he was the only candidate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis victory is for Latin America and the Caribbean,\u201d said the elected official in a statement sent to the EFE<\/em> agency shortly after his election, also confirmed by the IDB in a press release.<\/p>\n

Thus far, Trump\u2019s advisor alluded to the controversy generated by his candidacy, which broke with the tradition of always placing a Latin American at the head of the multilateral institution based in Washington, an unwritten norm that had been fulfilled during the 61 years of the Bank\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

His election ended three months of debate on the replacement at the IDB, chaired since 2005 by Colombian Luis Alberto Moreno, and the frustrated attempt by several countries to postpone the vote until March 2021, when there is a possibility that Trump\u2015who nominated Claver-Carone\u2015will have stepped down from power.<\/p>\n

The Cuban government\u2019s reaction came in a tweet from Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez, who described the election at the head of the IDB of a strong critic of Havana and promoter of a hard line towards Cuba, Venezuela and other nations not favored by Washington as \u201coffensive\u201d for Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe imposition by the United States of an employee of the most reactionary sector of anti-Cuban policy at the IDB is a danger and offense for our peoples,\u201d the Cuban foreign minister wrote on his Twitter account.<\/p>\n

Rodr\u00edguez added, without mentioning Claver-Carone by name, that \u201cit is difficult to find someone less suitable\u201d and affirmed that the new IDB president \u201cwill divide the region trying to impose an agenda of domination and the Monroe Doctrine.\u201d<\/p>\n
